Context is all.

I'm finally starting to set up a del.icio.us account, and as I keep saying to anyone who'll listen, it is LIKE PORN for me. It is so deeply satisfying. I've always organized links for my own benefit, privately, but now that they're to be shared, I'm thinking about things in a way that I haven't before. How my format, my tags, the quotes I choose, will -- in whatever small way -- shape a reader's perception of the work. CONTEXT. And spoilery tags, how to deal with that? There are so many little questions where I find myself torn between a decision that will please me, personally, and one that will better benefit other people.

But anyway, I don't want to talk about that; I want to talk about vids. Right now, I'm using two tags: vid and video. "Vid" is for clips set to music; "video" is for other types of fannish video, like trailer recuts and live-action films and animations and whatnot. But then la_fono linked me to something I'd never seen before, "Eko Bitch" [youtube version] which is the music video for a song mashup, both by the same creator, DJ Le Clown. The audio mashes Martha and the Muffins' "Echo Beach" with Busta Rhymes' (with will.i.am and Kelis) "I Love My Bitch." The video mashes a bunch of sources, including the "Echo Beach" video, the "I Love My Bitch" video (which itself is a take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith), The Avengers, X-Men, Kill Bill, Tomb Raider, Un Chien Andalou, Spawn, and several others.

The vidder does not come from the fannish vidding tradition (?), and I don't know if I should even call this a vid. Although clearly it is, for some value of "vid." I don't know how I'm "supposed" to be reading it, because it comes across so differently than if it were done by "one of us". If it had come from within fandom (within the section of fandom that we generally call "fandom,"* I mean), I'd probably be inclined to read it against the lyrics. But as it is, I see it as more of an illustration of the lyrics than a commentary on them. Especially considering some of his other videos.

* Could I "put" more "words" in "quotes"?

So, what it boils down to is: context is all. Context, context, context. I don't know where the vidder's coming from, so I don't know where he's trying to lead me. I did find it worth watching, though. And the track is really earwormy.
