Hey man, this is how I'm looking at the schedule in my area of things...
You're likely going to be arriving in HIJ at around 9:00 pm (if earlier, that's even better, but I don't know how much we can plan on that) and I'll be at the airport waiting. Unfortunately, we may or may not be able to take the last bus back to my city (Kure), so you can look forward to lot's of fun in the form of about an hour long train ride from the airport.
Items on the agenda include going to Hiroshima and showing you the Peace Park/A-Bomb Museum, maybe heading out to Miyajima, and I'm looking into a Kyoto/Himeji trip, too. There's a bunch of factors going into the actual schedule part of it, like weather, how long it takes for you to adjust to jet lag, etc., so the list can get shorter or as long as you want. If there's anything else you want to do in the southern area of Japan, then throw some ideas out there.
As soon as you book tickets, I'll request for the time off, but I'm expecting that I'll be dropping you off at Hiroshima Station sometime in the morning, probably the 3rd or 4th (hey, that means I have you for your birthday, right?). Getting to the northern part of the country will likely take you most of that entire day (arriving at night).
Oh, while I'm thinking about it, you're going to want to pack light. Not that you're the type of person to bring everything you own with you on a 3 week long trip, but I highly recommend you pack only one suitcase and bring along a backpack to travel around with. Think about mobility when you're packing stuff (and remember that Grey and I have washer machines and dryers).
