Title: I'll take you... to the fair!
Author:
glowstickfandomFandom: Ace Attorney
Summary: Based on Croik's series "I'll take you", this is a reworking of a failed piece of coursework of mine (Recycling old stories = win!) Klavier offers to take Apollo to the fair. Mentions of 4-3 in this chapter, but I'm not sure if it really counts as a 'spoiler', as such.
Pairing: Apollo/Klavier
Warnings: None whatsoever, except for tooth-rotting candy floss fluff.
Author's Notes: The 'some singer' that Apollo refers to is Adam Lambert and the quote is from his interview with Rolling Stone :)
By the time the two had started to walk around, Klavier had already devoured his hot dog in less than 3 bites. Apollo was munching on his candy floss absentmindedly, vaguely enjoying the sugary residue it was leaving on his tongue whilst he was mulling over the events of the day. His eyes were scanning over everything on the fairground, trying desperately to commit every little detail of his surroundings to memory so he could compare it to his childhood fantasies. He was enjoying gazing at the fairy lights, as they shined and sparkled against the contrast of the dark, December sky, proudly drawing attention to themselves, hearing the jolly jingles coming from the various rides scattered around the field accompanied by the shrieks and laughter of contented children, and inhaling the overpowering resulting aromas of onions frying, meat patties being cooked and sugar being spun into tooth-melting, flossy goodness. Being at the fair was reminding Apollo of the childhood he never had.
Apollo felt a strong hand squeeze his upper arm, instantaneously snapping him out of his reverie and making him shiver. He turned his head to face the owner of the hand invading his thoughts, a certain blonde haired prosecutor.
"Achtung, Herr Forehead! Let's go on the ferris wheel, ja? You look cold, maybe sitting close to me will help warm you up." Klavier raised an eyebrow and gave Apollo a cheeky wink, to which he responded by rolling his eyes.
"Thanks, but I-I'd rather not..."
"Aw, I was just joking," Klavier nudged Apollo with his elbow, "I won't invade your 'personal space'," he made air quote gestures with his fingers at the foreign concept. "Let's get in the queue!"
Klavier tried to pull Apollo towards the queue by his bicep but Apollo snatched his arm out of Klavier's grip and crossed his arms defensively.
"No, I-I don't want to" Apollo's voice quivered as he spoke, which he hoped Klavier hadn't picked up on.
Klavier's bright blue eyes sparkled as they widened with concern, still slightly in shock from Apollo's unnecessarily abrupt gesture.
"What's wrong, Herr Forehead? You sound... nervous" Klavier chuckled lightly as he said those words but stopped as soon as he saw the expression on Apollo's face. He placed a reassuring hand on Apollo's shoulder and felt the smaller man tense under his touch.
"Are you okay?"
Apollo brushed Klavier's hand off him. "I'm f-FINE!" Apollo's unconvincing Chords of Steel didn't fool Klavier.
"If you're so 'fine', why did you feel the need to shout it at me?"
"Erm..." Apollo avoided Klavier's probing gaze.
"C'mon Foreh-Apollo," Klavier corrected himself, thinking that the moment needed more seriousness than he was giving it credit for, "Why don't you want to go on the wheel with me?"
Apollo sighed and looked back into Klavier's twinkling blue eyes. "If you really must know, I-I'm..." Apollo swallowed, only just realising how dry his throat had become. "I'mafraidofheightsalright?" Apollo's words came out as a jumbled string of syllables which caused Klavier to throw a questioning look at him. Apollo simply responded by looking away in embarrassment.
"What was that?" Klavier blinked in confusion at Apollo's statement.
Apollo sighed, realising he'd have to admit his greatest fear to the glimmerous fop standing next to him again. His eyes focused on his shoes, suddenly finding them more interesting than anything else on the fairground.
"I'm afraid of heights, alright? When I was a kid, someone dared me to stand on a bench when the teacher wasn't looking, I did it but when I got up there, they pushed me off and I ended up breaking my arm and fracturing my ankle. Since then, I've not even been able to look at high things, never mind go on them. Happy now?"
Apollo dared to glance up at the prosecutor standing before him, who he expected to double over laughing at any second. But he didn't. Klavier simply had his eyes closed, silently considering Apollo's revelation. After an eternity had passed between them, Klavier finally opened his eyes, fixing them on Apollo's expectant brown ones.
"Apollo, it's okay to be afraid of things, ja?" Klavier gave Apollo a sincere smile. "but you needn't worry, Kuschelbär, I won't let anything happen to you. Just imagine what the view will be like from up there!"
Klavier could see Apollo's mind weighing up his options. "I wish I could go up there, I really do, but I'm still scared. What if something bad happens?"
"Nothing bad will happen, I promise. You've always dreamed of this, since you were a child, ja? Let's make those childhood dreams come true!" Klavier had a full on grin on his face by this point, and Apollo found it hard to refuse the man anything when he looked at him like that.
"Ah... alright then. I'm still not comfortable though. I mean, these rides look about twenty years old, they could break down any min-"
Klavier cut him off with a firm tug at his forearm and started leading Apollo towards the queue, which had died down significantly since Klavier had last looked at it.
"Calm down, Herr Forehead, I'll look after you."
As they stood in line, Apollo shuddered as a gust of icy cold wind bit at his exposed skin. Upon noticing this, Klavier edged slightly closer to the defence attorney, trying to radiate some of his body heat towards him.
"How can you be cold? You're wearing about 4 layers!"
"Five, actually," Apollo corrected him, "are you not cold at all? It's about minus 3 out here!"
"I'm always hot, baby" Klavier winked at Apollo, before taking off his purple jacket and draping it over the smaller man's shoulders. "Better?"
Apollo nuzzled his cheek into the fabric of the collar, enjoying the scent of the cologne that the material had absorbed. "Thanks, but you're going to freeze!"
"German winters are much worse, I assure you. I think I can handle this."
As the line edged forward, Apollo could see goosebumps appearing on the parts of Klavier's forearms not covered by his leather gloves or his shirt, obviously feeling the cold more than he anticipated. He'll NEVER admit he's cold and take back his jacket after all of that bravado, he's got too much pride, Apollo thought. Glimmerous fop.
Apollo tentatively leaned in even closer to the rock star standing next to him until they were practically touching, trying to share his newly found body heat with him.
Without even thinking about the implications, Klavier swung his arm over the shorter man's shoulders, snuggling up close against him.
"Danke, Apollo."
They soon arrived at the front of the queue and after receiving a puzzled look from the operator of the ride regarding their close proximity, they were lead towards their little 2 seater, open air carriage. Klavier stood aside to let Apollo clamber aboard first, quickly following him onto the seat, knowing that the brisk, winter air would sneak between them if they weren't quick enough. The operator yanked a metal safety bar over their heads and instinctively, Apollo put his hands on it, pulling them away less than a second later.
"That's SO cold!" Apollo's Chords of Steel piped up as the sub-zero alloy pierced and bit at the skin on his hands with its arctic temperature, causing Klavier to jump in shock. Apollo shoved his hands into the pockets of Phoenix's grey hoodie, where his fingers landed on the cold tub of hair gel he had shoved in there earlier. As soon as they had arrived at the fair, Apollo had yanked off his crash helmet, almost thrown it back at Klavier, and dashed off to the toilets for some emergency hair grooming. He had gelled his hair back into those iconic spikes in record time, as he was so eager to get walking around the fairground.
With a sudden, jerky motion, the ferris wheel started to rotate, causing Apollo's breath to hitch in his throat. He felt an arm snake around his shoulders and without hesitation he cuddled up close to Klavier, being too terrified to care about things like 'boundaries' and 'personal space'.
"Don't worry, Schatzi, it'll be fine." Apollo could've sworn he felt Klavier kiss the top of his head, but since he was so panicked, he had no idea if he'd imagined it or not.
When the pair reached the top of the ferris wheel, it came to a gradual halt.
"Oh my God, why have we stopped? Oh God, we're stuck at the top!" Apollo was rapidly becoming hysterical, and he squeezed his eyes tightly shut as his spikes started to droop, trying to block the situation out. "We're going to be here for hours! Oh God, I can't breathe, I-I-"
"Relax, mein Forehead. We're just stopped so that more people can get on at the bottom, okay?" Klavier laughed briefly before continuing, "It's nothing to fret about, trust me."
Apollo's heavy, rapid breathing calmed slightly. "Oh, are you sure?" Apollo opened one eye and looked over at Klavier.
"Ja, I'm positive. So you can open your eyes now. Just look at that view!"
Apollo warily straightened his face back to his normal expression, slowly opened his other eye and dared to look beyond the cold, silver bar holding the pair in their seats. And boy, he was glad he did.
The sight he received in return was spectacular. His eyes roamed over the incredible LA skyline, lit up and shimmering, looking every bit as glamorous as some of the people living there.
"Is it smog that makes everything look that way?" Apollo mused, gazing into the distance. "Or is it glitter?" He turned to Klavier, whose eyes were glistening along with the buildings on the horizon.
"Hm, I'd put my money on the glitter, knowing this city. Where did that come from, anyway?"
"Oh, it's just a quote from some singer. It seemed appropriate, considering how amazing that view is."
"LA does look beautiful from up here," Klavier sighed wistfully, before shifting in his seat to face Apollo, "Are you glad I convinced you to come up here?"
Apollo continued to stare out at the city before him, completely mesmerised with the twinkling lights. "Oh, God yes. Thank you" he finally managed to drag his eyes off the panorama to look at the German sitting next to him and give him a grateful smile, "then again, we've not started moving yet."
Klavier bowed his head and started laughing, before looking back out at the stunning vista. "Shut up, Forehead."
Just as Apollo turned his head back around to join Klavier in looking out over LA, the ferris wheel came back to life, causing Apollo to jump slightly. It was funny, really. Being there, what felt like thousands of feet above ground, after dark, on an ancient fairground ride wasn't scaring him nearly as much as it could, and should have been. I...I feel safe in his company...
"I'm glad you've helped me confront my fears, I really am. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Klavier."
WHAT THE HELL DID YOU SAY THAT FOR, JUSTICE?! As soon as the words had gushed from his lips, Apollo instantly regretted them. Well, you sounded like a complete idiot then, didn't you? Apollo's spikes started to droop once again, and he could feel the perspiration start to burst out of the pores at his hairline.
Apollo's words shocked Klavier, to say the least, but more than anything, he was, well, touched that the shy, socially awkward defence attorney felt comfortable enough around his supposed 'rival' to admit his fears to him and, above all else, let himself be helped by the 'glimmerous fop'.
"It was no problem, Apollo. We all have our fears, ja? I'm glad I could help you with yours."
Their eyes met for a split second, before they looked away from eachother, embarrassed by the intimacy of the moment.
After a full rotation of the ferris wheel, the pair found themselves at the top again. Apollo decided to break the awkward silence surrounding them.
"So, erm, you said that we all have our fears, yeah?" Klavier nodded, before Apollo opened his mouth to continue talking, "Are you, uh, afraid of anything?"
Klavier considered this for a moment, before sighing in defeat. "Well nowadays it's just the things that everyone else is scared of, really, like growing old alone and getting wrinkles." Klavier looked down at his feet, suddenly feeling ashamed of his response. "Oh, and now I always get a slight anxiety when I start playing my guitar. I always worry that it's going to catch fire again."
Klavier sensed slight disappointment on Apollo's part from the lack of a personal revelation, but he didn't really want to think about it anymore, as that performance held some painful memories for Klavier. In fact, those few months after that had been the worst time of his life.
He felt a shiver down his spine, nothing to do with the temperature, and glanced at his watch to distract his wandering mind. 9.57, the display read.
Suddenly, the lightbulb in his head switched on as he remembered something they had been told at the entrance to the fairground.
"Hey, Herr Forehead, it's nearly 10 o'clock. Aren't the fireworks starting soon?"
"Oh yeah!" Apollo's eyes widened in delight, shining as the gleam of the fairy lights reflected off them. "We'll get such an amazing view of them from up here!"
As if on cue, the pair heard an amplified voice from down below. "Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, the firework display is about to start. Are you ready for it?"
All of the spectators from the ground shouted "Yes!" in response, as well as Apollo from the still rotating ferris wheel, much to Klavier's amusement. This caused Apollo's face to turn the colour of his usual court attire.
"I can't hear you! I said 'Are you ready?'" The amplified voice teased the awaiting crowd, who replied with a louder "YES!" this time, accompanied by Klavier screeching "JA!" at the top of his voice, which caused Apollo to giggle like an overexcited fangirl.
"Alright then! Boys, light the fuse! 10, 9, 8," the voice started to count down, before he was drowned out by the audience.
"7, 6, 5, 4," the croud chanted loudly, the atmosphere building up more and more with every number.
"3, 2, 1, 0!"
