I just read an article on yahoo (by Gabby Hyman) entitled "Entry-Level Jobs That Pay More Than $50k".
One of the 10 listed was high school teachers. She says that "While many believe teachers are underpaid, a near-$60,000 entry-level salary makes for solid earnings." She claims that the STARTING salary for teachers is $59,269.
Excuse me? Where is she getting her data? New York City and San Francisco? I know perfectly well that this is bunk. My wife taught for 5 years and made little more than half that. The Cleveland area may not have inflation-crazed salaries like some "big" cities, but neither is it bottom-of-the-barrel. It's actually pretty much at the national average.
Furthermore, my sister-in-law, who has been teaching (though not high school- the pay usually doesn't differ) in another area typical of most of America, now makes somewhere in the neighborhood of the claimed starting salary . . . after 10 years of experience and a master's degree.
Finally, according to Careerbuilder's salary calculator, the national average, and this ISN'T starting salary is $45,155.
Ms. Hyman, please do some research next time.
