[recs] holiday challenges, part one

Dec 26, 2006 13:02

I made out like a *bandit* this year. For yuletide, a very kind pinch-hitter gave me Cross Country, which is Hopey on the road with Tex, riffling through her bag and her memories. And for jbbs, my Santa created Of the Heart by Derivation, which is Mia and Bart hanging out in the Tower and discussing the hero's life. *squishes them hard*

But, really, we *all* made out like lucky, lucky children. Some recs from my first passes through the archives; while I haven't read all the JBBS, let alone Yuletide, fics, here are some current favorites...
From jbbs:
Five Things That Never Happened To Jason Todd 3.0. I can't tell if the "3.0" refers to this being the third 5T fic about Jason, or this being the third iteration of Jason. I think it's the latter, because these are specifically five things set after the resurrection. And, good gravy, the writing is as sharp as Jay's knife and the characterization is frighteningly good.

Hug-O-War. Like the previous fic, I can't figure out how this doesn't have, like, a GAZILLION comments already. The narrative voice is just a *bravura* effort, funny and sly and meta all at once, while the story itself -- a Young Justice body-switch -- makes me squeak gleefully. And it's hot! In that awkward, mid-adolescent way. Yes.

Third Wheel. Oh, my *heart*. Bart during his second tenure on the Titans, watching his friends curating their secrets, and --. It's just *Bart* and Tim and I love this very, very much.

I Want You (She's So). One of a couple (several?) Grace/Anissa fics this year; I haven't yet the read the others, because this is *fantabulous*. Grace gets characterization beyond loudmouthed horndog! And Anissa is sly and sexass and the sex...is dirty, sweaty, needful, and *right*.

Turn My Face to the Wall. Roy on his knees and Dick trying to restrain his romantic heart? CHRISTMAS FOR ALL.

JBBS feedback post. Please use it! Authors are neurotic little creatures.

From yuletide:
singin' that same old song - The President's Daughter series - Meg was of the opinion that, if you thought about it, it was really pretty funny: she was a candidate for public office, Steven was an emergency room doctor, and Neal was a trauma psychologist. Obviously being the President's children hadn't affected or screwed them up at all.
I can barely express just how much I loved Ellen Emerson White's series about the daughter of the first female U.S. President when I was a kid. Meg was just...I wanted to be her. So very badly. And then there's this fic, which has White's diction and Meg's voice down *cold*, but brings all the characters forward, through time and loss, and it's just wonderful. This is what Yuletide's about, seriously.

From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea and Unstrung are both Green Arrow fics; the first is Roy apres le deluge, and it's evocative and creepy and fantastic, while the second is Cissie in the aftermath of the Crisis, with Connor being his wonderfully odd, mellow self. Both are just *wonderful*.

Perfect (Green Lantern). Someone wrote Carol Ferris gen! And she's smart and saucy and both Hal and GL appear. I really enjoyed this.

The holiday/birthday ficlets I planned to post yesterday and today will be delayed, because, well. I'm a slacker and thenotoriousg is home all week, and I'm easily distracted. Very, very sorry.

eta: I usually *hate* announcing gifts-received publicly, but somebody gave me a present for the profile page and I don't know who it was, so thank you, shy but generous soul!
