random and not so random thoughts

I received yesterday a note from my son's school, enquiring whether we would like him to return next year to the school and (more to the point of the note) in case we did, requesting the payment of x amount of money as an enrollment fee.

As I was reading the note, it hit me. I'm being asked to make a decision about next year just as I'm starting to feel that I've managed to get this year under control. Fernando will be in third grade next year, and - in case we decide he'll return - he'll have been in the same school for three years. THREE YEARS.

I came to Puerto Vallarta in 2002. Before then, I'd moved around a total of ten times in half as many years and held a total of eight teaching positions (in my defense, some of those were overlapping) and I was certain that I still had not found the place where I wanted to settle. Almost five years have gone by. I've worked at the same place for almost four and lived at the same apartment for three. Willingly or not, I have come as close to settling as I thought I ever would and that alone is scaring the living daylights out of me. I feel the sudden urge to pack up and leave, in a very futile attempt to demonstrate I'm still young and un-settled and immature, that this is not the way my life was supposed to go down but merely an temporary detour and the best is yet to come. I think turning thirty has finally caught up with me.

At least I didn't go and buy myself a red convertible. But then again, I also have not met a Portuguese person.

The weekend went well and my beloved Colts are out to kick Brady's ass still on the fight for a ticket to Miami. Jeff García and the Eagles had a good game last weekend as well, but honestly - how can you beat such a rowdy bunch as the NO fans? Those people are LOUD. Oh, and before I forget ... Mr. Reid, What the fuck were you thinking?? You DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT punt on fourth and 1234684645654 in the final minutes of ANY playoff game. Not when you're trailing!. You'd better get García back on that roster next year, mister. I'm just sayin'.

Random quote of the day:

Student A: "Miss! So-and-so's just hit me!"
Miss G: "So-and-so, did you hit A?"
Student B: "I did, but he started it!"
Miss G: "A, did you?"
Student A: "Of course I did! But he's got no business hitting me back, you always say we should let the teacher handle it!!"

*headdesk*

Random quote of the day, take 2:

Student C: "What are we supposed to do with those Spelling words on the board?"
Miss G: *supresses exasperated sigh* "You need to write each word five times in your notebook."

*several minutes later*

Student C: "Can't I just do each word three times?"
Miss G: "No, you have to do it five times"
Student C: "Can't I just do it for homework?"

*murderous stare*

My mom might have been on to something when she said I should be an accountant.
