Lunch, Boxing, Movie

I started my day with a trip to the library to pick up some items I had on hold and to select some others that struck my fancy. Among them are the Ali DVD and War Horse book. It's all part of my attempt at being more engaged with upcoming shows.

Ann came over for lunch to try the green soup. She described it as saag soup. That's pretty much what it is I guess, but it tastes fairly different and doesn't look as much like a cow pie. Saag really, really looks like it came off the barnyard ground. My green soup tasted much more like broccoli which made me think eating it with cheddar would be logical. It was.

Today's training was entirely boxing. I wrapped up with a new pair of handwraps which may have been a factor in my sore hand. They are shorter than my other pair, thus less material to keep my knuckles in place. I was also hitting harder than usual and did a lot of heavy bag work and a lot of mitt work. I think I just jammed it, because I can still move it without problems. If I broke or fractured anything, that's really going to suck.

Today's new skill was throwing counter punches while moving backwards. Counterintuitively, you step back with your left foot while throwing a left jab. That feels very, very unnatural at first but it's just another skill I need to practice to learn. Step forward with left, throw left. Step back with left, throw left.

After a shower at home and dinner, I decided it would be a good night to go up to the Crest and see a movie. Flight was my choice and as luck would have it, it was screening in the big theater. That screen and auditorium are so much better than the other three, which are kind of terrible. And you can't argue much with $3 tickets.

If you haven't seen Flight, do it. It's fantastic for several reasons which have been discussed extensively by all the film critics. This is one of Zemeckis's finest dramatic movies as a director. Denzel Washington puts on one of his greatest performances and were he not going up against Daniel Day-Lewis, he would probably be a shoe in for Oscar. I have yet to see Lincoln so I can't compare. The plane crash and the moments preceding it are just as "harrowing" as everyone says. It's stressful to watch that happen, naturally, but it's much more troubling to watch Denzel repeatedly drinking himself into a Lost Weekend level stupor. He plays every scene perfectly and because we already know his hero movie star persona, it's that much more difficult to watch him destroy himself. See it! If you have any friends with self destructive tendencies that you don't know how to deal with, or if you yourself have some demons, this movie may really speak to you. It will almost certainly give you pause when one more drink tempts you.

Back to work tomorrow with an office day to prep for the multi-day run of Rain, the Beatles cover band we have constantly. Further on I'll be dogsitting again for Courtney and Robbie (what am I thinking?).
