There have been these huge wildfires in California, I don't know how much coverage it has received outside of the state though. One started on Tuesday, the smoke could be seen from my town, and the flames at night, but it looked so far away. By Friday there was so much smoke and ash was falling from the air like snow. The power went out at school and they sent us home.
Saturday the fire was in the mountains right by my house and our power was off again and some people in the area were evacuated. It was hard to tell with all the smoke how close it was. It seemed the winds were going to move it past us though. I gathered what I could in the dark anyway into a backpack just in case and went to bed around 1:30. At 4 my sister woke me up telling me to pack my things it was right behind our house. There is an open area behind the side of the street I live on with lots of shrubbery. I go walking back there a lot. It was all on fire. My dad and my sister's boyfriend were out there with a garden hose, they got all the property wet and then spent the next few hours on the fire with other neighbors. My sister and I got our animals and went to her boyfriends house.
They managed to keep it from getting to our house. It's all very surreal, like when people ask each other, "If your house was on fire, what would you take?" Luckily our house wasn't on fire. I don't think I can express how big the flames were though, the whole field behind our house ablaze, I don't know how they controlled it. Our pool is black from all the ash in it. School was cancelled today. Many houses in my area were destroyed.
Things seem better today though. There isn't so much ash in the air; the air is not clear, but it is more blue than yellow. The power hasn't gone out yet since I've been up. It's terrible though, my area is not in danger anymore, but so many other people are now.
