Journeying Home

As Plum pulls the little hobbit cart--now all the lighter for having been unladen of its contents--back towards the faraway Shire, Diamond wrote in her journal.

My dearest Pippin. I have started on my long journey home. I did not see the dragon at the place that he had bid me come to. Loki vanished with all of The Cleeve! It was quite astonishing! I have begun to wonder if Loki might not have been the dragon, all along, just teasing me. He is a skinchanger, after all. Perhaps he was just pretending to have the form of a man! It is a most strange thought, true, but I almost find it to be comforting. For if Loki really was the dragon then he would have had ample opportunities to gobble me down, and eat Plum and Iolaus too. But he didn't.

I don't know how long it will take for us to get back to the Shire again. We are traveling a bit faster than when we'd started out, but we are also being very cautious indeed, after all that we have seen. Iolaus is taking quite good care of me. You would think that he has lead whole armies of men from the careful manner in which is plans the trip home.
