Preparing to leave Rivendell

Feb 01, 2004 16:41

The sun had already risen midway in the morning sky before Diamond woke the next day. Since she was by nature an early riser, she first mistook the golden light flooding across the coverlet on her bed as the first light of dawn. It wasn't until she actually got out of bed and looked out the window that she realized with surprise that she had slept through most of the morning. Why, in little more than an hour, it would almost be mid-day!

She had slept through breakfast, second breakfast, and elevensies! It was nearly time for lunch! Good grief!

She freshened up and dressed in haste. Fortunately -- and strangely too, now that she thought on it, the mysterious picnic basket that had appeared out of thin air in her room the night before was once again stocked with fresh food. "Thank you!" she said to whomever had given her this wondrous gift.

Munching happily on a blueberry scone, she picked up the basket and left her room. Neither of her companions were in their rooms, so she wandered Rivendell for a few minutes to look for them. She could not find iolaus_lj or trickster_loki. For that matter, she couldn't find Arwen, her brothers, Glorfindel or Erestor. She told herself that it was her own fault for sleeping in. Likely they were all off somewhere doing something enjoyable.

Rather than spend more time hunting for her companions, Diamond sought out the stables where her pony Plum had been put up for the night. She found Plum contentedly munching on oats. Someone, and this delighted Diamond to no end, had braided Plum's mane and tail with beautiful ribbons and beads. He had been combed and curried, and even his hooves had been buffed and polished. "Why, Plum!" Diamond said. "'Tis a pity the other Shire ponies can't see you now! They'd hail you as king of the ponies!"

She stowed the picnic basket in the cart and started to make ready to leave Rivendell. She wished so much that she could stay longer, but knew that she couldn't. Assuming that she survived her trip to see the dragon, Diamond vowed that she would return to Rivendell again, and with her husband and son the next time too.
