Maine Vacation -- July 10-23

Aug 20, 2022 13:05

My most recent vacation was to our family's vacation spot in western Maine, owned by my 3 siblings and me, but it has been in my family since 1938 when my grandfather purchased it. We have two rustic cabins on our property (unfinished -- no drywall, heating or cooling -- but we have spring water for drinking, electricity (my grandfather added in 1954), a landline phone (added in 1971) flush toilets, hot water, and water pumped from the lake for bathing (my mom added in 1995), and finally, two years ago we got internet access. There is almost no cell phone service there). These cabins are only usable in summer. Each family gets about two weeks of time there.

1. South Cabin -- Photo taken from the dock. Inside there's a small living and dining area (open concept) and a kitchen (which we redid in 2015). Upstairs are two bedrooms. On the porch is where the bathroom (shower, sink and toilet) is located
2. North Cabin -- mostly used for sleeping. There's a living area, but there are two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs off of the small living area. There's a kitchen area, but not developed enough to prepare meals. There's only a sink, mini fridge, and microwave. there is also a bathroom on the porch similar to the one in the South Cabin. This coming fall we are doing major renovations to that cabin. We will be removing the kitchen due to a rotted foundation. We will also be removing the non-working fireplace (more expensive to fix it). Where the fireplace is now will go a smaller kitchen area. Where the kitchen was, will be a cement "slab" patio. We will be adding another bedroom downstairs. We are also dealing with drainage which caused the foundation rot. I hope it's done by next summer...!
3. This is our loon stained glass chandelier inside the cabin over the dining table. It was a gift to my Mom from all of us many years ago, but it remains in camp.

We have a dock which gives us access to the lake for both swimming and boating. The dock is where "life is lived!"

1. dock - showing the lake, taken after a late afternoon storm when the sun had just come back out.
2. View of the lake from the dock, taken moments after we arrived "in camp."
3. Lake ripples with interesting reflections

1. Swimming fun on the "inflatable loon" with my son and little granddaughter.
2. This photo was taken at sunset while we were having cocktails on the dock. We face east so the sun was setting behind us, but the clouds were still colorful.

2. The full moon
3. A rainy day gives an interesting of the lake and dock

Our son, daughter in law and 6-year-old granddaughter came up for 6 days, and we took one side trip to the Cog Railway up Mount Washington. It was at least 30 degrees cooler and windy on top, and wearing shorts and short sleeved shirt in 54 degrees -- with a wind chill -- didn't work. Ooops! I wasn't able to scramble over the rocks due to my weak knees (and that was sad) But the views were spectacular and the ride up and back was fun:

1. On our way up
2. View from the top

1. Mt. Washington Summit - I never actually got there because I couldn't scramble over the rocks
2. TipTop House -- (not open - but cute)

1. A cog railway train coming up
2. Another view - showing the side of the visitors center (where I went to finally get warm and eat our packed lunch)

1. View on the way down - taken from the window of the train
2. A close up view of another train - on the way down.

We ate out a few times, but I only took photos once at "The Loon's Nest" restaurant. We ate out on their deck overlooking the marina on the lake:

1. my fish tacos
2. some local hard cider - very good - not too sweet
3. Our view of the marina while we ate.

Here's to Next Summer!!
