Why yes I do happen to have some kitty litter
The good news is the radiator's no longer obnoxiously loud and hissy. The bad news is that I only learned how to fix that problem thanks to the much damper problem of the radiator spilling water out of the gap at the base of the open/close knob onto the new carpet. And lo, it became clear how the mold that triggered cat-asthma came to be.
One adjustable wrench/spanner, a screwdriver and a couple of sodden oven mitts later my radiator is sitting quietly in its pool of kitty litter, laid down to absorb the moisture up from the carpet. Ah well, at least I was able to repair it myself.
