I finally got all the ingredients together to make my Magna Faire entry tomorrow. It's amazing how difficult it is to find currants -- I nabbed several boxes off the holiday baking aisle just so I won't have to go through this again the next time I make it.
Dugal went to Fresh Market yesterday for the saffron; it's the only place that carries it in packs that cost less than $16.00. Anyway, they were still out of the small packs after Thanksgiving. He asked a cashier about it, and he went to see if there was any in stock that hadn't been shelved. There wasn't. Long story short, after a bit of general conversation, the cashier ended up *giving* him a $16 bottle of saffron. Happy holidays to me.
I was going to make butter -- to add to the "complexity" angle -- but that didn't pan out. It's OK, though; I have several ideas of things to do to add complexity for future runs at this entry.
In other baking news, I'm making another book-related recipe for this weekend: a Cream Cheese Pound Cake with an Almond Pudding Ribbon. And I'm taking a stab at the Bacon Baklava, using maple syrup instead of honey in the syrup.
Looks like the Treat Fairy will be at Magna Faire!
