Patients Make Beautiful Music on ‘Glee’

If you belong to the throng of TV viewers who happily describe themselves as “Gleeks,” last night you were treated to the talents of 11 patients from our Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases. Portraying patients in a hospital, they starred in a scene with Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison, singing “This Little Light of Mine” while Morrison strummed on the ukulele.

The youngsters spent a day filming a scene for the award-winning, musical FOX television series and their hard work paid off in more than a paycheck when the episode premiered Tuesday, Feb. 15.
What our patients said about their day on set:

“It was unbelievable that I got to meet everyone, and they were all totally nice,” said 10-year-old patient and actor-for-a-day, Grayson Arroyo-Smiley. ”It was awesome! My favorite part of the whole day was everything!”

One scene-stealer in particular was 6-year-old Jazmin Madrigal, who struck an instant bond with Lynch. “Jazmin’s favorite moment was when she sat on Jane Lynch’s lap during the filming and got to sing with her,” said Jazmin’s mother, Sandra Mandrigal. “She loved playing with Jane prior to the recording, as well as taking pictures with Jane and all the other kids. Her experience was awesome and fantastic she would definitely do this again.”

Aisha Iyengar, age 9, was overjoyed to have been a part of the experience. “Singing the songs was easy because I already knew the words. It was my first time singing on TV and it was awesome! My friends are going to watch me on TV - I’m so excited!”

At Our Hospital

The patients wanted to thank health educators at our hospital’s HOPE Resource Center (part of the HOPE Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles), Jackie Gilberto and Susan Gantan. The Center provides information and resources to patients, parents and families dealing with cancer or blood diseases and both Gilberto and Gantan helped coordinate the event. While the “Glee” performance is clearly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Jackie shares that the staff work hard to coordinate events for the kids at least a few times a year, whenever the opportunity arises.

And it’s opportunities like these that really show how our patients are determined to live life to the fullest, despite any health issues they might face.
