Down and Out in London and Paris

Mar 06, 2006 01:28

I had a nice entry all worked out in my head but now the cold medication is taking hold and it's all Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds for me.

I haven't had much time to update which is a shame as I wanted to keep some sort of record of all my travels.

I had a great time in London. My friend Igor and I tore up the town and I think I tore a ligament! Apparently Igor used to be a professional dancer and apparently I like to think I'm a proffessional dancer when I'm drunk. Apparently Igor and I also like to put on a show and do our 'routine' when we are extremely un-sober at an after hours in London. I'm not sure how we got back to the hotel in one piece but when I woke up at 4pm the following day I could barely move. Diagnosis: Whiplash. Yeah that's right boys and girls somehow I got whiplash whilst spinning around on the dancefloor. Sometimes I astound myself at how exceptionally awesome I can be.

I did manage to get some sightseeing in while I was there though. I went to Westminster Abbey, Big Ben etc. we even went up in the London Eye. That was pretty neat, it's an eyesore on the skyline but it's a cool experience nonetheless. A few other amazing things I got to see last week : A burning ring of oil in the middle of the Atlantic at 3:30am, the Baffin Islands on a beautiful clear sunny day AND the best thing, a river atop a glacier atop a mountain! A blue like you've never known...

Paris was nice. I had been to Paris before a few years ago with my rock n' roll band. So you know, seeing the Eiffel Tower was pretty ho-hum ...

Just kidding! I don't know if I'll ever get sick of it.

Everyone everywhere is constantly making out in Paris. People are kissing over the table in restaurants, up against the walls at the Metro stations, in the corner booth at a bar.. it's just make-out city! I loved it. Another thing I noticed about Paris is that it's not over-run by tourists. The hot spots are of course but, the regular streets are pretty much just Frenchies. God help you if you don't speak French there. None of the announcements on the trains or signs on the metro are in English and most people can't really speak English that well. I think that is why there was such a lack of tourists in the streets. They probably stick to the Contiki tours that take them to tourist friendly restaurants etc. My girl Amrita and I had a good time going through the markets, buying scarves and trinkets... we stopped for a Caffe Creme at a bistro, took some silly photos etc. Then we got horribly lost on the metro for 3 hours! Eventually we made it back to the hotel and laughed about the whole thing over a few glasses of wine and a cheese plate.

Our hotel included a free breakfast which was nice. Not the usual stale danishes and shitty coffee.. this one had bacon, eggs etc. and then smoked salmon, fruit salad, fresh yogurt, cold cuts, croissants, chocolatines, fresh juice, coffee, tea, cocoa it was a plethora of Frenchie breakfast foods! Yum!

My last morning in Paris I awoke to a snow covered ground. It was amazing because the snow in the courtyard of the hotel had remained untouched by people or even wind so the snow was balancing on the tree branches. I was eating breakfast in the atrium before sunrise and I had the privelige of being able to watch the sun rise over a delicately snow covered Parisien scene.

The worst part about Paris was losing the remote control and being sucked in to the French version of Coyote Ugly. How did I ever watch that movie once in English?? I don't know. WHY did I ever watch that movie for a second time in French???? I really don't know.

My next stop was Manchester, which I love, love, LOVE! I think Manchester is my favourite place so far. My hotel had themed floors and I was on the 'Oriental' floor. My room was all decked out in green silks and heavy carved wooden furniture. I think it's the best hotel so far too... Free wireless in the rooms! Manchester is a pretty cool city. All the girls had awesome hair and excellent style. The boys weren't too bad either. I went to a shop called Primark which was like.. if H&M and Dollarama had a baby. I got a fur trimmed hooded vest for 8Pounds! It's crazy in there, I got a tank top for 2pounds! The pound is currently $2-1.

I am looking forward to getting back to Manchester.

My next destination is Cardiff, Wales and then back to London again.

When I arrived at Pearson internationl my friend picked me up and we drove straight to Windsor for another friend's 30th birthday party. I had nothing to wear so I went to the Devonshire Mall and bought a cute outfit for the night. I had to laugh though, here I've been all over these fancy places and I don't buy anything and then I come to Windsor and spend every last penny at a shitty mall. When I awoke from last night's drunken stupor I saw that I had left myself $1.25 until next Friday. Luckily someone let me borrow $50.

So this has been a long post that has left out all the juicy details. My head is spinning from the meds though I best be off.

Until next time.

xome.
