Holidailies Post 18 - Halcyon Days

Dec 26, 2008 17:45

I'll admit it, only 17 posts in and I'm starting to wane. Hopefully I'll be more inspired tomorrow.

While I like Winter it does have a drawback (I'm sure you can think of others, but this is my main concern). The nights are getting shorter. While, yes, the hours of darkness far outweigh the hours of light, it marks a turning point. Less time with stars and moon. Less time with the Night.

I believe that I've always preferred the Night to the Day. Not because the night is mysterious. Not because the Night is scary or spooky. I'm not entirely sure the reason of my fascination. Maybe it's because I can't be seen. No one knows I'm there. It's easier to blend into the Night than it is the Day. In the Night I feel more at ease, no harshness, no squinting the eyes to see better.

While I do enjoy the lighter side of the year, it always seems to last too long. The Winter and the Fall seem to fade too fast. Even with the sometimes horrible, sometimes wonderful holidays that fall squarely in the middle, once they pass it's back to the quiet, sweet embrace of the Night.

I love to go outside in the Winter on a cloudy night, where you can simply reach up and touch it. It soothes me like no other thing. It feels like being inside a cave, with an immensely high ceiling. That warm, comforting feel of being completely surrounded.

Maybe that's why I like the mountains so much. When you look around, all horizons are only five miles away. Reaching up to the sky, hugging you.

Now we're in the Halcyon Days. A night, calming, quiet change from what we've had lately. The winds have died down, the temperature is almost perfect (upper 50s in the day, upper 40s at night). As I said, everything...

almost...

perfect.
