Eighteen year-old Nikki Betancourt is tired of prom, actually no, she’s completely sick of it. Left and right girls are hitting the gym, guys are buying hotel rooms, and color swatches are getting passed around like notes during class.
What’s the point of stressing over something that’s only going to last a few hours? ‘It’s a right of passage,’ her mother keeps telling her, but so is graduation, and that doesn’t come with a corsage.
And honestly, Nikki’s irritation has nothing to do with the fact that she doesn’t have a date yet. The boys here are idiotic, not worth her time. Well, maybe one is, but Nikki has better things to do than look desperate.
“Hey Nikki, what up?”
Speak of the devil. Closing her locker, Nikki turns to see Dominique Park, fellow senior and point-guard on their school’s basketball team, lean against the locker next to hers.
“Hey Dom. About to catch my bus home, you?”
“Nothin’, chillin’.” He flashes her his trademark smile. “I was just wonderin’ if you had a date to prom yet.”
Nikki raises her left eyebrow. “No, why?”
“Wanna go with me?”
“You don’t have a date yet?”
“I’ve had offers.” He smirks. “You don’t want to go with me?”
“I didn’t say that.” Nikki shrugs. “Yeah, I’ll go with you. But play me and you deal with my brother, he’s golden gloves.”
Dominique puts his hands up. “No funny business. We’ll talk about it later, okay? See ya curls.”
Rolling her eyes, Nikki tries to ignore the warmth that’s spreading through her; she’s had her eye on Dominique for a while. Hiding a smile, and no, she isn’t blushing, Nikki walks out her school building. She’s still annoyed with all this prom business, but maybe now it’ll be kind of worth it.
