“Are you sure that David and Wes are straight?” Kurt asks, placing his tray on the table and taking his usual seat across from Blaine in the dining hall.
Blaine doesn’t look up - he has an assignment due first period today and he’s only one problem away from completing it. “What did they do now?”
Kurt blinks, but before he can respond David and Wes both simultaneously plop down in the two remaining seats across from each other at the table and drop their heads in their hands. “Morning,” they mumble together.
“What’s wrong with you guys?” Kurt asks, picking up a piece of toast and spreading a packet of butter on it.
“David forgot to set the alarm,” Wes replies, lifting his head and glaring at the boy across from him.
David looks up, affronted. “I didn’t forget! I just…set it on the wrong time.”
Wes’ glare intensifies. “We get up at the same time everyday, David, how could you set it wrong?”
David looks down sheepishly, bringing his hand to the back of his neck and rubbing quickly. “Remember when we set it yesterday for our nap before Warbler’s rehearsal? When I reset it last night I didn’t check to make sure the switch wasn’t on PM anymore.” He looks up slowly, and Kurt’s jaw almost hits the table when Wes reaches out to touch David’s arm, all of the anger and hostility gone in a flash and replaced with a gentle smile.
“You should have told me when you went to set the alarm. I would have checked it for you, you know that,” Wes says softly. “Come on, let’s go see what’s still left for breakfast, everything can’t be put away yet.”
Kurt watches as they get up, falling into step with each other once they get around the table. Kurt doesn’t miss the bright smile that David turns on Wes when he bumps his shoulder against David on the way to the front.
Kurt turns his attention back to Blaine and is surprised to see Blaine watching him, a small smirk on his face. Kurt raises his eyebrow in a silent question. Blaine closes his notebook and laughs. “I’m sure Wes and David think that they are straight.”
Kurt frowns. “You lost me.”
“David and Wes are … a special pair.” Blaine starts, capping his pen and rotating it between his fingers. “They’re totally dating - they just haven’t figured it out yet. It’s hilarious really.”
Kurt frowns again and pierces a piece of egg with his fork. "How can two people not know that they’re dating?”
Blaine smirks again. “Just start watching them more, you’ll find out.”
*~*~*
So Kurt watches and day-by-day he understands Blaine’s explanation more. David and Wes are, well, they’re pretty oblivious. They're definitely closer than any best friends Kurt’s ever encountered - unless you count Brittany and Santana, but everyone already knows they have something deeper going on between them. David and Wes are more touchy-feely, almost alarmingly co-dependent, and have this freaky habit of knowing exactly what the other is thinking at any given time. For two people so in-tune with each other, it’s completely baffling that they haven’t figured it out yet.
*~*~*
“Your friends are idiots,” Kurt says as soon as he lets Blaine into his dorm room.
Blaine blinks, his brows bunching together at Kurt’s statement, before a look of understanding crosses his features. “You’ve been watching them haven’t you?” he asks, lips turning up in a smile.
“Yes,” Kurt replies, moving to set his room up for the study session they’re about to have with Wes and David. “How do you stand it? They’re making my brain hurt.”
Blaine shrugs and places his textbook on Kurt’s bed. “You get used to it eventually,” he answers.
Kurt spins around and raises an eyebrow at Blaine. “Eventually? I want to shake both of them until they figure it out.”
“I don’t think shaking them will do any good,” Blaine replies, moving to say hello to Pavarotti. “Right now, they still think they’re one hundred percent straight. It’s going to take some time before they realize that they’re in love with each other.”
Kurt frowns. Blaine is right of course, but Kurt’s sick of watching them be oblivious around each other. “Why can’t we just hint it at them? I mean David just took Wes out to see Wicked for crying out loud, and you can’t just say it was a friendly outing because they didn’t even think to invite us, and we all know how much I love Wicked!”
Blaine turns back around to Kurt with an amused smile on his lips. “Patience, Kurt. They’ll figure it out. Just think of them as Simba and Nala from The Lion King. When the time is right, everything will fall into place.”
“Simba and Nala?” Kurt questions. “What does a Disney movie have to do with anything?”
Blaine nods, crossing the room again to sit on Kurt’s bed. “It’s their favorite movie. David brought it to Dalton his freshmen year and wouldn’t stop watching it. Wes grumbled about it a lot but they ended up bonding over it. Turns out it was Wes’ favorite childhood movie and he hadn’t seen it in years. Now they watch it every other Friday night in their room.”
Kurt opens his mouth to reply, but a knock on his door interrupts him and he goes over to answer it instead.
“Hey guys!” David beams at them as he allows Wes to walk into the room in front of him. “Sorry we’re late; I couldn’t find my French textbook.”
“It was in the back of his closet,” Wes says, walking over to the chair closest to Kurt’s desk. “I don’t even want to know why it was there in the first place.”
“Dude, I have no clue,” David says, shrugging. He sits down in the chair next to Wes' and opens his book up. “What chapter are we going over tonight?”
*~*~*
An hour into their study session Kurt decides that maybe if he hums a few lines of ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ Wes and David will take the hint. He just about gets the first line out before David quickly catches on, his face splitting into a wide grin as he hits Wes excitedly in the arm and joins in.
Fifteen minutes later, Kurt is stuck watching Wes act out Zazu’s part in ‘I Just Can’t Wait To Be King’ while David plays Simba and Blaine plays Nala.
He won’t ever try this plan again.
*~*~*
It’s raining and Kurt’s just returning from a shopping trip in Lima with Mercedes and Tina when he sees them. They’re tucked away into one of the corners of Dalton’s third floor hallway, sitting on a dark brown cushioned bench that's facing a window. The curtain’s pulled open just enough for them to see outside and they’re pressed together, David’s arm around Wes’ shoulders and Wes leaning into him. They’re talking quietly, clearly so caught up in each other that Kurt wonders if they would even notice him if he walked over to them. He doesn’t though, just stands there awkwardly and watches as Wes leans his head up and says something in David’s ear, the other boy laughing quietly and pulling Wes closer.
It’s not fair; Kurt can’t help but think. These two have everything that he’s ever dreamed of and they’re just ignoring it. This is different than anything that happened with Finn or Sam, or even what’s going on between him and Blaine. He never really had a chance with the first two, and the last… Well, Blaine is amazing, and Kurt’s enamored, of course, but this is still a new school, and Kurt’s not sure what he’d do if he pushed Blaine far enough that he became uncomfortable and stopped hanging around him anymore. Besides, he really is trying to calm down on his advances and pushing away the only boy who’s ever really understood him wouldn’t be such a great idea. It’s just that Wes and David are in love, mutually, and waiting for them to figure it all out seems pointless.
David drops a kiss on Wes’ temple, smiling softly when they lock eyes. Kurt walks away.
*~*~*
“So, I think I’m getting some negative vibes from you against me,” Wes says, dropping down in the chair across from Kurt in the library. “What’s up?”
Kurt looks up, surprised to see Wes in front of him all of a sudden. “Huh?” he asks, frowning in confusion.
“I feel like you’re angry with me,” Wes says, tilting his head in a way that instantly reminds Kurt of their first meeting in Dalton Academy’s café. “What happened, did I do something to offend you?”
Kurt blinks and taps his pen against his notebook absently. “No, I’m not angry. Why would you think that?”
“I don’t know, I’ve just been getting this vibe, but when I told David he laughed at me, so I decided to ask the source.”
“Ahh, David,” Kurt says, leaning back in his chair slightly. “Where is your other half?”
Wes raises his left eyebrow. “Do you have something against David?”
Kurt smiles and shakes his head. “How is that even possible? He’s like the happiest guy I know.”
Wes smiles softly and nods. “Then what is it? And don’t try to tell me it's nothing because you’re kind of transparent.”
“If I ask you something…” Kurt starts, tapping out a quick beat with his pen tip. “Will you just laugh like you did the day I met you?” At Wes’ confused frown Kurt continues, “You and David, you guys are dating, you haven’t… I mean, you guys really haven’t figured that out yet?”
“Is that what’s been bothering you?” Wes asks, an amused smile threatening to overtake his face. “I think David and I would have told you and Blaine if we were dating.”
“But you are already!” Kurt exclaims, trying to make Wes see, make him understand. “You guys are practically attached at the hip; you cuddle, you’re always taking each other out, and you’re different around him, more relaxed, less intense.” Kurt shakes his head. “I don’t get it, why don’t you see it?”
Wes is laughing now, and Kurt can’t help but frown, he doesn't see what's so funny. “You’re not the first person to say this you know,” Wes says shifting in his chair. “But David is my best friend Kurt, and that’s all he’s ever going to be.”
“But he can be so much more!” Kurt tries again. “You’re perfect for each other.”
Wes calms down and fixes Kurt with a piercing gaze. “This is really bothering you, isn’t it? There’s something deeper here isn’t there?”
Kurt shrugs, a mask of false nonchalance falling into place. “You’re in love with him, and he’s in love with you, but it’s not my place to force you to see it.” He grabs his textbook and notebook and stands up. “I just know that if I were you, I’d take that next step. I bet it’s not as foreign as you think it is.”
*~*~*
As always, time moves on; classes get harder, the song possibilities for Regionals grow longer, and Wes and David still make Kurt want to bang his head against the nearest wall. They’re still oblivious, still going out on “not-dates” and snuggling up together when they watch movies or listen to music. The only difference is that now they’re both single. David broke up with his girlfriend about a month and a half ago, and Wes went home one weekend a couple weeks ago to find his girlfriend in the arms of another man - apparently she couldn’t handle a long-distance relationship anymore.
They got through both sets of heartbreak just fine and now they’re even closer than before. Of course, how that’s possible, Kurt’s not sure, but Blaine takes pleasure in laughing at him every time he catches Kurt scowling in Wes and David’s general direction. And speaking of Blaine, February 14th will forever go down as one of Kurt’s new favorite days ever. He has a boyfriend now, an actual boyfriend, and Kurt will never get tired of saying that.
As the day for Regionals grows near, David has officially been put on what everyone likes to call “Wes Watch.” It’s frustrating some days and downright infuriating others, but Wes is giving Rachel a run for her money on razor sharp intensity when preparing for competitions. Wes wants everything to be perfect and when he’s not in rehearsal he’s constantly running through harmony options or trying to figure out choreography and blocking patterns. On a good day Wes will remember to stop and eat on his own. On a bad day, David has to pry the music sheets out of his hands and sit on his lap to force Wes to watch a movie or calm down for a while.
It’s a week before the big day and everyone can’t stop glancing between Wes, half expecting him to just blow up, and the clock, waiting for rehearsal to be done for the day. With things so tense, as soon as 8pm hits, everyone runs out, not trying to spend any more time than is necessary in the council member’s tense presence. Kurt and Blaine are halfway up to Blaine’s room when Kurt realizes he left his binder in the Warbler room. He doesn’t really want to turn back and get it, but he needs that binder tonight, and if he goes to Blaine’s room first he already knows he won’t want to go back and get it later. Grabbing Blaine’s arm, they head back down to the glee club room.
*~*~*
Upon arriving, the first thing Kurt notices is that Wes and David are sitting on the couch facing away from the door, and Wes seems to be in the middle of a nervous breakdown. Not wanting to interrupt, Kurt stops Blaine from announcing their presence and pauses, thinking quickly about how to get the binder in the most efficient manner. Blaine raises an eyebrow in question, but doesn’t say anything, instead choosing to lean against the doorframe and watch his two friends on the couch.
By this time, David is pressing tiny kisses all over Wes’ head, first starting at his hair and working his way down. Kurt has finally figured out how to get his binder un-noticed when he notices a subtle change in the air, Wes and David have locked eyes and they are slowly leaning into each other. Freezing in place, Kurt watches as they touch lips, hesitantly at first, but then David moves his mouth and Wes gasps, and before Kurt can even blink Wes and David are practically devouring each other’s mouths, looking all the world as if they just found water in a desert. Kurt backs up slowly to the open double doors, standing next to Blaine, as Wes and David finally break apart.
“So I guess we really are dating huh?” David asks quietly, resting his forehead against Wes and grinning softly. “I feel like my heart is dancing a waltz to a song in 4/4 time.”
Wes laughs, licking his lips slowly and rolling his eyes. “Kurt is going to kill us when we tell him, I feel like I’ve been on his hit list ever since he transferred and got to know us.”
Kurt raises his eyebrow, and turns toward Blaine when he hears a soft snort from behind him. Blaine reaches out and pulls him in closer, pulling them out of the room and into the hallway away from the scene they just witnessed. “See, I told you in time they would figure everything out,” he says, pressing a kiss to Kurt’s ear.
Kurt rolls his eyes and smiles. “Just like Simba and Nala,” he says, all thoughts of his binder long forgotten. Blaine nods, smiling as they head off down the hallway.
Kurt’s quiet for a moment before he breaks the silence, turning to Blaine with another raised eyebrow and a light frown. “Wes is right though! All those months, my poor sanity, I’m going to kill them!”
