A/N: Took a while to write, but it's here! Hope you all like it! :)
"Morning raven hair!"
Opening his big, baby blue eyes, Adam wakes up to see Ben and James standing at the foot of his hospital bed with huge grins. He then runs a hand through his own jet black hair and blinks sleepily.
"Hey," he says back to them a scratchy morning voice, "why are you guys here?"
"We, er, thought you could use a little...cheerfulness in this jail of a place," Ben answers, "so we came to keep you company."
Adam snickers and sits up a little bit more in his bed. "You bring any games or something?"
"I told you we should bring something," James snaps, hitting Ben's shoulder hard. Adam has to struggle not to laugh at the sight.
"Well sorry! I didn't think he would be this bored!"
"You are so blind."
"I can see very well, as a matter of fact."
"Exhibit A."
"What is that supposed to-"
"Uh, guys," Adam finally cuts in, "I am here, ya' know."
James blushes deeply. "Sorry."
"We get carried away sometimes," Ben adds, "as you can tell."
"Yeah, I can."
Just then, Dr. Mayar walks in, and for a moment, Adam panics. The look on his face was not one of.....happiness. Or, for that matter, any good feeling.
He looked......shocked? In disbelief?
"Excuse me, but...um....I need to talk to Adam...alone."
Ben looks at James in a way that clearly shows his worry about exactly why they have to leave the room and then does leave with him quietly. As soon as the door closes, the doctor turns and looks towards Adam, his face still grim as ever.
"What's wrong?" He quickly asks as he watches the doctor pull up a chair and sit next to him. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Adam......you need to be one-hundred percent truthful with me here, okay?"
Adam quickly nods. "Yeah."
"Have you been having bad dreams lately? Like, a lot?"
"Uh," he nearly whispers, "I guess?"
"What about?"
"I can't-"
"Adam, you need to say-"
"No-"
"Adam, I-"
"I CAN'T TELL YOU," Adam suddenly screams, covering his ears and shutting his eyes, "JUST GO!"
"Adam," Dr. Mayar calmly says to not startle him any more, "you need to speak about this with me. I am your doctor and I have my concerns-"
"They're dreams. What in the world does dreams have to with anything..medical?"
Dr. Mayar frowns and then places his hand on top of Adam's. That's when Adam realizes what exactly as going on. Why the doctor was looking so grim.
Something was wrong with him.
And it was bad.
"Adam," he whispers in the dead silence, "you have been experiencing some dreams about the incident with Crystal and the gun, aren't you?"
"My daughter," Adam replies, his bottom lip trembling, "she's in them. She....she gets hurt....then I wake up..."
Dr. Mayar sighs deeply and then looks deeply into Adam's eyes. His whole face looks the epitome of sorrow.
It couldn't be good.
"Adam......you are suffering with a case of PTSD from the shooting-"
"No," he says stubbornly, "I...I'm fine....I...it's nothing really...I swear."
"The shooting effected your brain, Adam, and these dreams are a way of telling you that it did-"
"I CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEN," Adam once again yells, this time his eyes going wide, "SHE CAN'T WIN!"
"Wha...what are you talking about?" Adam all but punctures the skin of his palms, he's digging his nails in so hard. Something inside him is warring. Fighting. Disagreeing. He can't physically get himself to answer the kind doctor in front of him.
"Adam, I need you to tell me why-"
"G-go," he manages to choke out. "I want you out."
"Adam-"
"Telling you would give her power over me," he continues before Dr. Mayar can continue. "She doesn't need to ruin any more of my life. At all."
"You know what," Dr. Mayar says when he sees the worry in Adam's eyes, "you don't need to tell me more, Adam."
"Wha..why?"
"I'm going to get you someone who you can talk to," he says with a small smile. "Someone who will make you comfortable with talking about this."
Adam frowns. "Like a therapist?"
"Kinda like that, yes. But I'm going to get you one who specifically works with people who have endured a shooting or have witnessed one. That way, you'll be a bit more comfortable."
Again, Adam frowns, this time scooting away from Dr. Mayar. It seemed like he was trying to get away from him in a way.
"Adam, it'll help. Now, if you'd excuse me, I have other patients to attend to. See you soon."
With that, he's out of the room, and Adam's all alone in his tiny and boring room.
All alone and clueless.
Clueless that, just a few minutes into the future, he'd hear the most shocking news of his life.
His little girl was on the way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"James, please, we're around....people."
"Never stopped you before," James says, nibbling on Ben's ear. "At prom, you were all over me in front of the whole Junior class."
"Spur of the moment?"
"You are a big mood killer, you know that?"
Ben smirks and then kisses James on his nose playfully before sitting back on the large couch they were on. James sighs in annoyance.
"Adam and Kris always kiss in public, and look at them. They're the closest couple I know."
"They also are dealing with a lot of crap, James," Ben warns. "I don't want to get into too much stuff publicly."
"You are amazing," James responds in a huff. "I just want one kiss and then you go all paranoid about mmmph-"
Faster than he could process, Ben is on James, kissing him deep and passionately while James' head rushes fast. As fast as it was initiated, it's over, and Ben is sitting properly now on the couch next to him with a small smile. James laughs.
"What the hell was that?"
"You wanted a kiss," Ben replies, "so I gave it to you. Surprise, I guess."
"You little-"
"I want you to tell me where the hell Crystal is RIGHT NOW!"
Ben and James' gazes immediately fly to the front desk towards the all-too-familiar voice. They both gasp when their ear's suspicions get confirmed.
"Kris?"
Faster than ever before, Kris turns around and looks towards the two. Ben gasps and runs up to Kris, seeing tears falling down his face in rage.
"Kris," he says, taking him away from the frightened nurse at the front desk, "what's wrong?"
"Why don't you ask that numskull Brad that question and then get back to me, huh?"
"Brad didn't do anything," James says slowly, "did he?"
Kris bites his bottom lip and then nods, collapsing in Ben's arms. "My little girl is coming a whole two months than she should because of that big jerk. He threw Crystal at the wall and....and he made her water break. My little girl could DIE because of him."
"I'm sure he didn't mean it," James whispers, rubbing Kris's back. "He loves that little girl so much, Kris."
"If he loved her so much, than why did he do that, huh James? Do you have the answer to that?"
"Kris," Ben snaps, "stop that. You're being irrational and are taking it out on my love. Not cool."
"You have no clue, Ben," Kris replies, "you have no idea how horrible I'm feeling. You don't know how much I just want to scream at every freakin person right now. I AM MAD, Ben! SORRY if that hurts you."
James frowns. "Kris, I-"
"You can both go run off into the sunset, guys. If you'd excuse me, I have to go tell my future husband that our baby may die."
"Kris," Ben says, reaching for his arm before he can go any farther away from them, "we can help. We can call your parents or his or-"
"Go home, Ben," Kris fires back coldly, "you too, James. I don't need you here."
Ben sighs. "But Kris, we-"
"DID YOU NOT HEAR THE WORDS THAT I JUST SAID, BEN? GET OUT!"
James tries to reach once again for Kris, but before he can get close enough, Ben yanks him away.
"Let's let him deal with Adam alone, James," Ben says quietly. "We'll go call their families and the others, okay?"
"What if Kris finds out and gets angry?"
"He'll get over it the minute he has them near him," Ben replies, wrapping his arm around James' waist. "Trust me, he'll thank us later. Now come on, let's get calling."
"Okay."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"GET THIS THING OUT OF MY FREAKIN BODY SO I CAN KILL THAT BRAD GUY!"
One of the nurses sighs as she puts Crystal on an IV. "Crystal, must we tell you again? Keep calm or else you'll worsen your baby's chances of living."
"DO I LOOK LIKE I CARE ABOUT THE BABY? THIS HURTS LIKE HELL! HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED CHILDBIRTH?"
"I have," the nurse answers with an unamused frown. "Twice."
"THEN....HELP!"
"We already have given you every form of pain killer we are allowed to give you, Crystal. Maybe if you calm down, they may work."
"DOUBT IT!"
"Excuse me nurse," another nurse says, entering the room with a chart, "a man named Kris Allen is asking to see Crystal."
"MY KRISSY IS HERE? LET HIM IN!"
The nurse just sighs. "Go ahead. If it makes this girl calm down a bit, then maybe this kid will have a better chance."
"Okay."
"OWWWWWWW," Crystal suddenly shouts, gripping her sheets, "STOP THIS!"
"Crystal, the baby isn't coming for quite a while. Just quit your-oh my gosh."
The nurse quickly jumps from her spot and runs to the door. Once out, she looks about the hall helplessly.
"SOMEONE! CALL ONE OF THE DOCTORS! I NEED ONE IN ROOM ONE EIGHTY-NINE! STAT!"
Taking one more look back at Crystal in pain on her hospital bed, the nurse once again speaks, this time, more frantically.
"PLEASE! I HAVE A GIRL ABOUT TO HAVE A BABY!"
