Title: Truth, Justice, and the Federation Way
Word Count: ~9000
Rating: T, for language
Notes: A few weeks ago, I spotted a prompt at startrek_crack for "Superhero AU". I thought 'huh, sounds interesting'. Then I spotted a square on my cliche_bingo card that reads "Mutation/physical transformation".

...I think you can draw the same conclusion I did.

Or, how eight people got involved with the Federation Superhuman Program. )

w: language (++), type: alternate universe, wc: 5000+, f: star trek xi, co: cliche_bingo, type: one shot, fic: federation superhuman program

This was so much fun! I had as much fun speculating on who'd show up and what powers they'd get as I did actually reading. Your casting, btw, is made of awesome!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'd planned for bridge crew/main characters from the beginning, but picking powers was harder to do. I wish I'd given someone laser vision, but then I'd have to make a TNG comparison with Geordi LaForge, and the story might have never ended. ;P

Good lord, but this is made of super win. And ... Bones is invisible when he feels like it. My God. Fantastic.

I'm glad you liked it! Bones' power kind of came out of nowhere (well, trying to figure out how else he could get that nickname; I had a living skeleton!Bones at one point), but now that he has it I like it. Not mentioned in-story, but canon to me: he initially just thinks he's going prematurely gray and/or bald due to stress, as he goes invisible when sad/depressed and his powers first develop after his father dies and his wife files for divorce.

Superhero AUs are practically the best ever, y/y? Though I came up with Chekov and Sulu's powers first, Uhura's is probably my favorite. It doesn't hurt that her powers were inspired by two of my favorite abilities from the Heroes TV show.

In this verse, she spends a few years tracking down cyberterrorists and online records of illegal activity and sends the relevant information to local officials from non-existent email addresses. She signs most of them "Uhuru", but signs ones sent to engineers and computer technicians (and people who will actually understand/respect the work involved) with an asterisk to symbolize her name. There's a silly scene in my head involving Jim trying to guess her name and Scotty revealing that he already knows it.

She tries to hack the Narada to stop it from dropping the drill but can't communicate with it, which pushes her to look into xenolinguistics to get a better understanding of alien computer programming. And then she invents the Universal Translator long before its prime!verse counterpart ( ... )
