Title: Truth, Justice, and the Federation Way
Word Count: ~9000
Rating: T, for language
Notes: A few weeks ago, I spotted a prompt at startrek_crack for "Superhero AU". I thought 'huh, sounds interesting'. Then I spotted a square on my cliche_bingo card that reads "Mutation/physical transformation".

...I think you can draw the same conclusion I did.

Or, how eight people got involved with the Federation Superhuman Program. )

Superhero AUs are practically the best ever, y/y? Though I came up with Chekov and Sulu's powers first, Uhura's is probably my favorite. It doesn't hurt that her powers were inspired by two of my favorite abilities from the Heroes TV show.

In this verse, she spends a few years tracking down cyberterrorists and online records of illegal activity and sends the relevant information to local officials from non-existent email addresses. She signs most of them "Uhuru", but signs ones sent to engineers and computer technicians (and people who will actually understand/respect the work involved) with an asterisk to symbolize her name. There's a silly scene in my head involving Jim trying to guess her name and Scotty revealing that he already knows it.

She tries to hack the Narada to stop it from dropping the drill but can't communicate with it, which pushes her to look into xenolinguistics to get a better understanding of alien computer programming. And then she invents the Universal Translator long before its prime!verse counterpart.

I think I'm having too much fun with this verse. *scribbles notes*

Thanks for commenting, and for prompting this fic to begin with!
