Letters from Saetan

To whom it may concern,

Please excuse Karla's absence last week. She was at home offering her assistance as a Healer to a village under siege. She will, of course, make up any work she missed while in Kaeleer.

To whom it may concern,

Please forgive me if I begin by explaining details that you may already know. I have recently learned the extent to which Karla has been dishonest with her friends and family here in Kaeleer and have no other choice but to assume that she is being equally so at school. Therefore I beg your indulgence if this information is familiar to you; I assure you I will get to newer information, information I find it imperative for you to know, a bit further into my letter.

But first, some necessary background. Though I have no legal authority over Karla, I sent her to Fandom High School in an attempt to keep her safe. Her home Territory of Glacia is in a state of political upheaval and unrest, and has been since her parents, Queen Ilyse and Prince Audric, were murdered when Karla was nine. Though there is no concrete proof linking him to their deaths, it very likely that their murder was done on the order of Lord Hobart, Audric's brother and Karla's current legal guardian.

Regardless of his guilt or innocence in the matter of regicide, Hobart has proven himself unfit as a guardian. Karla is a powerful witch as we consider such things. She wears the ninth darkest Jewel out of thirteen, has the potential to wear the twelfth, and is a Queen in her own right, as well as being a Healer and a Black Widow. This may make little sense to you, but it is enough for Hobart to see her as a threat and a rival for the power that he has usurped. Yet, for all that she is powerful, she is vulnerable in the way that all young witches are who have not yet had their Virgin Night. It was an attempted assault on Karla that led me to send her to your school. Had it, or another like it, succeeded, Karla would be broken, stripped of her powers, unable to rule--assuming she survived the attack at all. Since she had been gone--which has been almost three years for us--Hobart has had her declared dead, which means his males have no reason to let her live, should they find her again.

In my efforts to find a place to keep her safe, I overlooked a lot of things, including Karla's own temperament. Karla has been raised to understand her duties to Glacia, and, in her capacity as Healer, has seen first-hand the abuses her people are facing under Hobart's rule. She sees her stay at Fandom an exile from her home. While I believe that she has come to love her school and the friends she has made there, she is still keenly aware of what she has left behind. While she is making friends and attending balls, her people are left to suffer under a tyrant's yoke. I do not have to be a Black Widow to know that Karla feels guilty, helpless, and frustrated by everything she cannot yet do.

From her castes, Karla has three sets of instincts pushing her to defend and protect the people she considers herself responsible for. But she cannot do so in Glacia until she reaches her mature strength. Instead, she is cast adrift in a world completely unlike her own and told to wait; you are receiving this letter because Karla trusts you, so I can assume you know how ill-suited Karla is to waiting even at the best of times.

I have recently learned, however, that Fandom is not the sanctuary that I had been led to believe. One of Karla's friends explained a few of the more dangerous invasions that the island is subjected to and how Karla is wont to fling herself into danger at the earliest opportunity. While I am upset and disappointed to discover that what I had thought was a safe haven was anything but, that is not the point of this letter. Nor can I lay the blame entirely on the administration for being deceived; Karla has had over a year to tell us of these occurrences and willfully chose not to. She had given us the impression that all has been well during her stay, neglecting to mention things like being sacrificed by an ancient creature (which, she assures me, did not happen on school grounds) and being stabbed and poisoned by a giant scorpion (which did).

Were I concerned simply for her physical well-being, I would not need to write to you today. But there is more that concerns me about Karla. Looking at her as she hands you this letter, I'm certain you can guess some of what that is. She is not entirely well, emotionally. Part of it is that she is a sixteen year old witch with a Territory's weight of problems on her shoulders. Part of it is that she was victimized in her own home, and to what extent, I do not know, beyond the attempted assault. But most of it comes down to guilt and feeling as if her life is out of her control, I believe. She runs headlong into danger and abuses her body to punish herself for surviving and even thriving while away from Glacia. It's also a way for her to atone--by saving and protecting those she cares for at school, it somehow makes up for those she couldn't save or protect in Glacia. She drives herself to the brink again and again and says she does not know how to stop or say no when someone needs her help. There may be even more issues there that I have not enumerated; tragedy and trauma are not strangers to Karla's life.

My own instincts demand that I keep Karla here in Kaeleer, find Healers and Black Widows among our own people that will understand her and help her. But she is adamant to return to Fandom and I believe that removing this last bit of control over her life may push her to new and greater feats of self-harm in an effort to regain a measure of it back. Thus, I am turning to you at the school for assistance in this matter. Karla needs help. I am asking that you do what you can to assist her. I do not know you, I know nothing of who you are or the people you come from. But I know that Karla trusts you enough to give you this letter and that must be enough for me as well.

Help her. Work with her. Do what you can to find her new and healthy ways to cope with what has happened in the past and what will happen in the future. Do so and you will have my utmost gratitude and the gratitude of her people. I remain,

Respectfully yours,
