Karla was no so foolish as to think that her life in the future with Warren and her children would be perfect or easy. Life didn't work that way, even if the random weekends almost made it seem that way

"I think if I were not here she would be pretending she was your child, as she did to Momoko and Dinah," Raven said, drawing closer. "Karla, this is my daughter, Alec. Her father is...."
"Stupid and evil and dead," Alec finished cheerfully.
Karla raised an eyebrow at that description. "Succinct," she said, dry as dry could be. "You remember the lumps of feathers that are my children, yes?"
"You're a baby," Nommy muttered, sticking his tongue out at Alec and not even caring that she was like, eight, or something. Whatever. Molting-season totally gave him a pass.
Ugh! He wasn't even supposed to be molting right now! Worst. Ever.
"Nommy!" Karla reproved, trying to fit in as much admonishment as possible into his ridiculous nickname. "Molting," she explained, rolling her eyes at Raven. "And timeline funny business. Presumably their siblings remain at home, doing other things."
"Alec is my only visitor this time, at least as far as I am aware," Raven said, giving the girl a fond smile. "I had planned to come to Fandom today, but when Dinah called me about Alec, I came yesterday instead."
"Glad to see you," Karla said warmly, giving Raven a fond smile. "And to meet this little munchkin," she added, ruffling Alec's hair. "Now, what you you two mean, when you say that Kayla helped you learn to fly the other day."
"But we're gonna try again!" Kayla announced, fluttering her wings. Nommy winced and spat out a mouthful of feather dust. "We're gonna jump off something first!"
"The Hell you are," Karla said cheerfully. She remembered all to well her dive off of Warren's balcony when they were both very small. "No flying for people under four feet tall."
"No flying with passengers for people under four feet tall," Warren amended. Because... There was no way he was going to restrict Kayla to the ground, if she was actually capable of getting air. "And no jumping off of things until you can keep up to me in a game of aerial tag."
Fortunately, there was a Kayla to the rescue.
"Alec! Hi Alec!" she said, twisting a little to wave hello. "Mama, that's Alec! I helped her learn to fly!"
...That was a generous interpretation of events, there, kiddo.

"You're not Nommy! Nommy's a baby!" Alec insisted, hands on her hips as she glared up at him.

"I wanna fly," Alec sulked. "'Specially since we're moving to Glacia."

She still wasn't sure what the "fly like Mom" comment meant, though.
