New York City was heaps of fun! Rumors played a great show (with an interesting audience) at Columbia. Dan took me to Brooklyn (where we got totally lost within like five blocks) and I visited the flesh-and-blood
Fred Flare store. We saw Coraline in 3D (AMAZING), walked all up 5th Avenue and around Central Park, had dinner and ice cream with Brandt (!), played a round of Settlers of Catan (Dan's friend Stav introduced me to an amazing online Settlers client--goodbye productivity), and had yumcha at the most ludicrous yumcha place ever (Jing Fong at Canal and Elizabeth: it has up and down escalators). Dan's NYU friends (and friends-of-friends) are adorable. I had so much fun.
On the bus ride home I sat across from a couple who bonded over linguistics and what third-world countries they'd like to travel to. She was eating
ikura spread on pieces of tortilla (What the fuck?). I can't imagine how proud they must have been to be taking the Fung Wah. Meanwhile the babushka to my right was flipping through a Russian tabloid and her ringtone was "Shipping Up To Boston" by the Dropkick Murphys. Guess who was my favorite bus neighbor?
Wanna know why I'm up so early? As I Lay Dying is confusing reading and I had to do a response paper on it so I allowed myself two hours to wake up early and get it done. By focusing on just one of the characters I managed to turn down the confusion and get it done in an hour. Clearly I don't know my academic self well enough.
The girl I tutored in Tokyo, whose essay I helped with and stuff, got into boarding school in Quebec! Hooray! I feel so proud.
