Harry Potter Review (mini)

Just a quick jot down of thoughts before bed, without actually giving anything away....

The film was very tight. Unlike some of the other ones, things are there for a reason. There were some very funny moments, but please remember how this book ends. Remember how nobody likes Empire? It's because it is always darkest before the dawn. When I left the theatre, I heard people say "this movie wasn't worth getting dressed up for" and applause at the end was polite. But, honestly, what did they expect? This is the part where it all goes to shit. It is a bit hopeful at the end, and definately sets up for the last movie, unlike the first few which feel very episodic.

Your favorite teachers will still be there (they have more dialogue than in previous films). But they dont' do a great job of explaining who people are (like Ron's snogging partner--I don't think they once say her name) so if you haven't been keeping up from the books, you may wonder who is important to the story. I was surprised that Voldemort did not appear, as we have known him so far. The main characters as a whole are the focus, rather than just Harry and his drama. Some very subtle acting. Great special effects.

I enjoyed the film in the way that it makes me want to see the last one and reread the book, although the experience of this particular movie definately lacked the anticipation of the others. I suppose when you know how the story ends, it loses some of its punch. Still, go and see it...but remember how the book ends and don't expect that happy ending!
