CHAPTER FIVE
KEY POV
"Okay so the doctor said that you have to give these antibiotics to Taemin once in the morning and once at night. Once he finishes the bottle he doesn't have to take them anymore. You got that right?" We were now in Onew's apartment after finally returning home from the hospital. Taemin went straight to his toybox as I talked with Onew in the kitchen. "You okay?"
"Yeah, just nervous because Minho hasn't returned my call yet. I hope he didn't forget about our date."
"Don't worry Dubu. It's not that late yet, he's probably just not done with soccer practice yet. He'll call you. And while you're out on your date, I can babysit Taemin."
"He told me to bring Taemin with me."
"Don't be silly. You deserve time away from him. Besides, he loves when I babysit him."
"Yeah, last time you babysat he started hitting me with that damn spatula. I have to put it on the top shelf in the kitchen just so that he can't get to it."
"Hey, I just needed to teach my baby how to protect himself just in case he was approached by some pedo-bear while he was in the park or something."
"Key, you're the only person I know who can use a cooking utensil for something other than cooking."
"That's what makes me almighty. Do you guys want me to cook you guys something quick for dinner? You do have food in here right and you're not feeding my baby take out."
"Well, it's been a few days since I've been able to go grocery shopping since Taemin's been in the hospital. I don't know what's still good and what's not."
"Well I guess I'll just have to make do with whatever you have. I'm sure you probably have chicken at least... right? Anyway go play with Taemin while I cook dinner okay?" I wait and watch as Onew heads to the living room and plops himself on the floor and begins to play with Taemin. I'm definitely taking Taeminnie grocery shopping with me when I babysit him this weekend.
TAEMIN POV
"Hyung, are you okay?" My brother was being really quiet.
"Yeah, Taeminnie, I'm fine."
"Are you sure you're okay? You don't look okay."
"I'm going on a date on Saturday with someone I really really like."
"A date?"
"Yes, with Minho hyung."
"Hyung, how come you don't go on a date with a girl?"
"Taemin, remember, I explained this to you. I like other guys."
"But why?" Even Key umma doesn't like girls.
"It's hard to explain."
"Why?"
"Taeminnie, I'm going on this date okay? Key is going to watch you when I go out so I want you be on your best behavior okay?"
I liked when Key watched me. He always buys something for me. "Okay hyung. Can you help me build the tower now? Hyung?" When I looked at him he was on his phone and he was smiling. "Hyung, come play with me!"
"Taemin, not now I'm on the phone with Minho."
"But..."
"Lee Taemin, go play with your legos." I hate the Bug man.
"Sorry about that Minho, my brother was just being a little pest.... yeah, we're at home now.... yeah, we just got home about 20 minutes ago actually... yeah... yeah, of course I'd still love to hang out with you on Saturday.... 11? That's fine by me... do you need a ride? I can totally pick you up... Okay, sounds good. Bye!"
"Guys, dinner's ready. I made a chicken stirfry." I heard Key call from the kitchen. I'm hungry.
KEY POV
"Taemin, please eat some of the vegetables okay?"
"Ne umma!" It was so cute watching Taemin eat, the chopsticks too big for his hands, rice all over his face. Reminds me of the way Onew used to eat when we were growing up.
"See, I told you he'd call back. You just needed to be patient. What did he say?" I wanted to know every detail about this date, and I couldn't wait for Onew to finally be able to find happiness.
"Well, we were just gonna go take a stroll around the park and then get something to eat after. He wants to hear me sing."
"Why not go to a noraebang?"
"Just the two of us? Maybe another time. He insists that I bring Taemin with me, are you sure you don't mind watching him?"
"When would I ever say no to having some mother son bonding time?"
"Key, how many times do I have to tell you, you're not his mother."
"Shut up. I'm his mother, deal with it."
"Whatever."
"Good. Taeminnie, do you want to hang out with Key umma on Saturday?"
"Ne!"
"So, did you tell Taemin that you're going on the date?"
"I told him earlier, but he didn't seem to really care. I don't know what he thinks of Minho, he keeps avoiding the subject whenever I bring him up."
"Just give it time. You're all that Taemin really has so of course he'll get jealous if his big brother is suddenly taken away from him."
"Well, Minho's good with kids, so I'm sure that eventually Taemin will be good."
"I'm done." I look over at Taemin's plate to see that he actually ate everything. Then I looked at the floor and saw pieces of onion, broccoli and cabbage scattered everywhere.
"Don't worry Onew, just keep eating. I got it." I walk over to the closet and get out the broom and dustpan. "Kids these days. Seems like it's so hard to get vegetables in them.
"Yeah, tell me about it. Even when my parents were still alive, my umma couldn't even get Taemin to eat a piece of lettuce without him spitting it out. Looks like this umma can't either."
"Just give it time. Speaking of time, I'm gonna have to go soon, unless you want me to spend the night. I'm totally fine with that."
"Do you mind? Just in case."
"No problem. Let me just call my umma and let her know that I'm spending the night."
"Thanks Key, I'm so glad that you're my best friend. I honestly have no idea what I'd do without you. Taemin, are you ready to go to sleep?" Onew asks. We could tell that he was getting drowsy, he kept rubbing his eyes, and nodding off as he played with his toys.
"No...."
"Here, I got him." I walked towards Taemin and picked him off the ground and walked him towards his bed. "Good night appa, good night umma, good night hyung...." I tucked Taemin in before giving him a kiss on the forehead. It was definitely heartbreaking to listen to him say goodnight to his parents.
"He misses them."
"I know, and I know you do, too. But it's time to move forward. I want to see you find happpiness okay?"
"Yeah..."
"Come on, show me what you're gonna wear on your date with Minho." I wanted Onew to look good, but I wanted him to be comfortable, too. His style didn't exactly scream fashionable. As Onew was about to go through his closet, I pushed him out of the way and began to rummage through his collection of baggy jeans, and long tshirts. "Dubu, do you have anything that doesn't hang off of your ass?"
"Well..."
"I guess this will just have to do then. We really don't have time to go shopping for a new wardrobe.... wait a minute, do you still have the clothes I bought you a few weeks ago for your birthday?"
"Please don't make me wear skinny jeans. It gets so uncomfortable down.... there."
"Well, if Minho sees what you're packing then I'm sure he'd be more than happy to ask you out on a second date."
"Key, that's so...!"
"What? Okay, here they are. And take this graphic tshirt as well. I don't know why you never wear the shirt."
"It's too... crazy."
"What? The design isn't that bad. Just put it on. You'll probably have to bring a jacket with you tomorrow anyway. It's kinda chilly out."
"Okay... fine."
How long did it take for one person to put on a pair of jeans and a shirt? "Onew, hurry up! I wanna see."
"No! The jeans look ridiculous." I hear him shout from the other side of the door.
"Don't make me break in to your bathroom. I know how and I'm not afraid to do so."
"Fine..."
It was actually nice seeing Onew wear clothes that actually fit him. His jeans weren't hanging off of his ass, his shirt wasn't baggy and loose fitting. "You look good."
"Thanks... I guess."
"Okay, you can go change back now, but at least I know you'll look good on your date."
"Shut up Key."
"Don't talk back to me like that!"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever."
MINHO POV
“Okay guys!” I shout and wave my team in, “That’s enough for today!”
“Geez, Minho,” Eunhyuk says as he plops down on the ground, stretching his limbs out on the soft grass, “You think you ran our asses off enough today? I feel like I lost 5 pounds during practice today. What has you so pissed off?”
“I’m actually in a really good mood today,” I tell him, sitting down beside him.
“Are you sure?” Junho asks, laying down as well bringing his knees up to his chest to stretch his muscles out.
“Yeah. I have a date on Saturday,” I smile at the thought of Onew.
“You do?! Seriously?” Junho sits up and stares at me.
“Yup.”
“Since when have you been over Khunnie?”
“I’m not 100% over him yet, but this is the first time since he’s moved that I’ve been attracted to someone.”
“Who is it?”
“Um,” I wasn’t sure if I should tell them or not, “Well.”
“Come on Minho, you can’t already be embarrassed of him,” Eunhyuk says, “You haven’t even had your first date yet. Just tell us who it is. We promise we won’t laugh.”
“I’m not embarrassed of him. He’s a really great guy, well from what I know of him at least.”
“Well then just tell us who it is already.”
“It’s the student body president, Lee Onew.”
“Really?!” they both say to me.
“Yeah,” I sheepish smile appears on my face and my cheeks start to feel warm.
“Hm, I never would have thought you’d go for him. I mean after dating Nichkhun that is,” Junho says. Oh did I mention that he’s one of Nichkhun’s best friends? Yeah, so I’m sure he’ll be telling my ex-boyfriend about my date the next time they talk. Not like it should matter if I date since we did break up before he left.
“I know that they’re nothing alike, but there’s something about Onew that draws me to him.”
“He’s so clumsy though. You might end up in the hospital at the end of the date because he tripped over something.”
“Don’t make fun of him Junho. I like him. This is the first person I’ve liked in over a year. So don’t ruin this for me. Besides, I find his sangtae kind of cute.”
“When did this come about anyways? I didn’t even know that the two of you knew each other,” Eunhyuk asks and takes the bottle of water that I had in my hands.
“We didn’t. I mean not really. We’ve had classes together in the past, but we’ve never talked.”
“So how did you score a date with him?”
“His little brother was in the hospital with pneumonia and you know I volunteer there, mostly in the pediatric ward.”
“Oh so you met him in the hospital.”
“Yeah. Did you know that he’s taking care of his brother by himself? Their parents passed away not too long ago. So it’s just him and his brother. I think that’s one of the things that attracted me to him.”
“How old is his brother?”
“I think he’s 7.”
“Wow that’s young.”
“Yeah.”
“Well I’m glad that you’re dating again. It’s about time that you got over that Thai prince.”
“Hey, that’s my best friend you’re talking about!” Junho lightly kicks Eunhyuk’s foot.
“Best friend or not, he’s no longer here. Minho can’t spend the rest of his life being all sad and depressed over him.”
“I know, but still. Don’t talk about my best friend in that tone.”
“Whatever Junho,” Eunhyuk gets up off the grass, “You think the rest of the team is done now?”
“I think I saw majority of them leave the locker room already,” the three of us had a habit of waiting until most of the team was gone before going into the locker room for a shower. It’s not that we were embarrassed of our bodies or anything, it’s just that it could get a little crowded in there. So we would stay and hang out on the field for a little bit.
“Let’s go then. I got a shitload of homework to get done tonight,” Junho says getting up off the ground.
“You do know that if you do the homework when it’s assigned and not at the last minute it won’t pile up like this right?” I ask as the three of us walk to the locker rooms.
“Yeah yeah yeah. We get it. You’re like Mr. Perfect.”
“I’m not perfect. Far from it actually. If I could I would do nothing more than the bare essentials to get by, but my family has high expectations for me. I can’t let them down.”
“Whatever. You’re still too perfect sometimes.”
“That’s what you think,” I hated when people called me perfect. I really wasn’t perfect. The only reason I got into volunteering at the hospital in the first place was because I had taken my dad’s car without permission last year. And then I ended up driving said car into a trash can. Don’t ask how it happened, it just did. So as punishment, my dad made me start volunteering at the hospital. It was either that or picking up garbage.
It takes me a good thirty minutes to shower and get changed. I didn’t like to rush after practice. I knew that I pushed my team pretty hard on the field, but it was for good reasons. A lot of them had really bad stamina when they joined the team a month or so ago, but now it’s improved a lot. Plus I like to push myself to my limits and I know some of the other guys do too. Eunhyuk and Junho being a couple of them. As much as they complain after rather grueling practices, I know they enjoy it. It’s an adrenaline rush in a way for the three of us.
I open my locker and take out my backpack. I reach into it and grab my phone when I feel someone pat my back, “Alright Minho, I’ll see you tomorrow!”
“Yeah, see you later Eunhyuk hyung. Be safe going home!” I say to his retreating back. He just waves to me as a response before disappearing through the door.
“You ready?” Junho asks, coming up to me, backpack slung over his shoulder and attention on his phone in his hands.
“Yeah,” I close my locker as I wait for my phone to turn on. I fling my backpack over my shoulder and we walk out of the locker room, turning off the light as we leave. My phone goes off in my hand to let me know that I have some text messages and a few missed calls. I check my calls first and see my mom called me, she probably wants me to pick something up for her before going home.
I dial my voicemail and listen to her message. I was right, she wanted me to grab some eggs and bread from the store because she wanted to make French toast for breakfast tomorrow, “Hey hyung.”
“Yeah?” Junho answers, fingers gliding over his phone before looking up at me.
“Can we stop by the market before you drop me off? My mom wants me to pick up a few things before I got home.”
“Sure thing. I’m kind of hungry anyways. I could use a snack before going home as well,” he responds just as we reach his car. He unlocks the door and pops the trunk. We both throw our bags in the trunk and then climb into the car.
As soon as I’m buckled in, I check my text messages next. I see that Onew texted me and I can’t help the smile that forms on my lips. I open his text and read it. It’s about our date on Saturday and my smile just gets bigger. I decide to give him a call once we get to the market, the last thing I need is for Junho to be eavesdropping on my conversation.
I’m itching to call him by the time we get to the store. I hope out, “I’ll be real quick hyung.”
“Take your time. I’m in no rush to get home,” he says as he gets out as well.
“It’s okay, I’ll meet you back at the car in 10 minutes tops. I don’t want to keep you from your homework,” I say as I run ahead of him, cell phone in my hand, ready to call once I’m inside the building.
“Don’t remind me,” he calls after me, taking his time.
I hit the dial button once I’m in the store, grabbing a hand basket as well. Normally I’d wouldn’t bother, but since one hand was going to be holding up my phone I thought it would be a good idea to try to avoid dropping everything by using a hand basket. I bring the phone up to my ear and listen to his phone ring. I hope I’m not calling too late or he could still be at the hospital, it wasn’t for certain that Taemin would be released today.
“Hello?” he says after about the fourth ring.
“Hey,” I reply, a cheesy grin on my face as I weave through the aisles. I temporarily forget what I’m supposed to be picking up for my mom until I pass by the eggs. I briefly hear him scold his little brother about something and feel bad. Maybe I called at a bad time.
“Sorry about that Minho,” he says to me, “My brother was just being a little pest.”
“It’s okay,” I place a carton of eggs in the basket, “Did Taemin get released from the hospital?”
“Yeah, we’re at home now.”
“That’s good. When did you get home?”
“Yeah, we just got home about 20 minutes ago actually.”
“I’m glad that’s he better. I’m sure you were worried while he was there.”
“Yeah,” he didn’t seem to want to talk about his brother anymore. So I decided to change the topic to one that I’m sure we were both just waiting for the other to bring up.
“So about Saturday,” I start off, the feel of butterflies forming in my stomach, “Do you still want to hang out?”
“Yeah, of course I’d love to hang out with you on Saturday.”
“Good. Is 11 okay with you?” I grab a jug of milk and place it in the basket as well. I figure I should get some bread too, just in case we’re out of that as well. My mom had a tendency to leave things out when she asked me to get groceries, somehow expecting me to know for her.
“11? That’s fine with me.”
“Great. I can’t wait to see both you and Taemin on Saturday then.”
“Do you need a ride?” he asks me out of the blue, “I can totally pick you up.”
He’s making this sound like more and more of a date. I mean I know I saw it as a date, but I wasn’t sure if he saw it as a date as well. I had used the term ‘hanging out’ instead of date on purpose, just to see how he would act. I’m glad that he’s treating this like a date though, offering to pick me up even though I was the one who asked him out in the first place. But I wasn’t going to complain.
“Sure, if you don’t mind. That would be great, that way we don’t have to worry about meeting up and all that stuff. Well I’m at the market right now and about to check out, I don’t want to be rude and talk while I do so. So I’ll see you Saturday.”
“Okay, sounds good. Bye!”
“Bye,” I end the call and place the phone back in my pocket. The smile never left my face the entire time I was talking to him. The ahjumma behind the counter gives me a sly look as if she knows what just happened and I just bow to her before giving her the money for my groceries. I can’t wait until Saturday now. I have a date with a cute and sweet guy.
ONEW POV
Saturday’s here before I know it and my nerves are getting the best of me. I haven’t really dated before because I don’t really have the time, especially now that I’m taking care of Taemin. Plus, I’m a little more cautious on who I let into our lives. If my brother doesn’t seem to like them, then it’s an automatic no on dating them. I wasn’t sure how he felt about Minho so I didn’t have a reason to not accept the date today. I’m sure Taemin would warm up to him anyways. He seemed to be very good with kids.
“Key!” I yell from the bathroom. I had just finished taking a shower and was standing in just my boxers as I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I was putting off getting into those damn skinny jeans for as long as possible. I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty big and those jeans hug my manhood a little too much to be comfortable.
“What?” Key asks, his reflection showing up next to mine. He was wearing my mom’s old floral apron, a bandana tied around his head, and had a spoon in his hand.
“My hair looks like a rat’s nest,” I say and point to my head, “What am I going to do? I don’t have time to go and get it cut.”
“Don’t worry, the almighty Key is here. I’ll take care of you. Just sit down for a second while I go and turn down the stove.”
“Okay.”
He walks out the room, calling my brother’s name in the process. I run a comb through my tangled hair while I wait for him. About five minutes past before both Key and my brother enter the bathroom.
“Hyung put on a shirt!” my brother orders me.
“Taeminnie, go sit on the tub while umma helps out your brother,” I see Key has a pair of scissors in his hands.
“What are you doing? You’re not seriously going to cut my hair are you?” my eyes are wide with shock.
“No, I’m going to cut you some cute little paper dolls to play with on your date,” he answers sarcastically, rolling his eyes in the process, “Of course I’m going to cut your hair. Now sit still.”
I jump off the toilet, “No way Key! You’re not coming anywhere near me or my hair with those scissors.”
“Stop being a baby and trust me. I was the one who cute Taeminnie’s hair last time.”
“What?! Then what did you do with the money I gave you for the haircut?”
“We went and got some treats to eat.”
“KEY!”
“What? You said you liked it a lot. So just sit down and let me cut your hair.”
“Fine,” I knew I was no match for Key and decided it would be best to just give in. I sat back down and let him get to work on my hair. He wrapped an old towel around me and then began to cut my hair. I played rock, paper, scissors with my brother while I sat there.
“There all done! And for being such a good little boy,” a lollipop appears in front of my face and before I can even think about grabbing it, Taemin already has it unwrapped and in his mouth, “Taeminnie, that wasn’t for you.”
“It’s okay Key. I was going to give it to him anyways,” I get up and walk to the mirror. I had to admit that Key did a pretty good job cutting my hair. He took off about two and half to three inches, my hair hasn’t been this short in over a year. I like it. One side was slightly longer than the other, but it looked better that way.
“You like?” Key asks as he continues to style my hair for me.
“I do, thanks so much!” I look down at my watch, “Shit! I have to hurry and get ready or I’ll be late.”
“Oh hyung! You said about word! That’s 500 won in the potty mouth jar!” Taemin says to me.
“Fine, fine. I’ll put money in there on my way out,” I rush into my room and start to throw on my clothes, Key following after me to dust off any stray hair that’s stuck to my body, “You sure you’re okay with watching Taemin while I go out?”
“Yes. I’m sure,” he responds.
“Taemin, you better behave for Key. I don’t want to get any calls or texts about you being bad, you understand?” I ask him as I struggle with the skinny jeans. Seriously, no guy should ever wear these jeans. They were not meant for us to wear. I lose my balance and topple to the ground as I’m pulling them up past my knees.
“Be careful Onew or the only person who’ll be taking you out is your sangtae,” Key helps me up and I pull the jeans up the rest of the way.
“How do I look?” I ask after buttoning and zipping them up.
“Perfect. Mr. Flaming Charisma won’t be able to resist you!” Key gushes.
“You look nice hyung. Are those my pants?” Taemin asks with a giggle.
“Thanks and no they’re not your pants,” I rush out the room, the other two right on my heels. I needed to hurry if I wanted to be on time. I pull on my shoes and grab my jacket. I rush to the counter and get my keys, giving both my brother and Key a kiss on the cheek, “Okay, I’m going you two. Taemin behave. Key don’t spoil him too much and keep that spatula out his hands. I’ll be back by dinner. Love you both! Text or call if you need anything.”
“We’ll be fine. Take your time. Have fun!” Key says, pushing me out the door. I get into my car after one last wave to them before I’m officially on my way to get my date for the day.
