The subject line is the title of a great short story by Vonnegut, in which society strives to make everything fair and everyone equal by handicapping people who are exceptional, i.e. "too good."

What made me think of it is this story out of New Haven, CT:
9 Nine Old Told He's Too Good to Play Ball

This kid pitches so well that the Little League banned him from pitching. He throws heat and he gets in the zone - meaning that he has control and isn't hitting batters, so it's not like he's a danger. Basically parents of the players on other teams were pissed the he is so good and their kids are always striking out and that it's not fair.

Guess what? LIFE ISN'T FAIR. YOU AREN'T GOOD AT EVERYTHING YOU TRY TO DO. AND USUALLY THERE WILL BE SOMEONE BETTER THAN YOU. BUT YOU GET UP THERE AND YOU FACE IT AND YOU TRY ANYWAY.

Instead, they're teaching their kids that when faced with huge odds or someone better, YOU FORFEIT.
