"I had a dream I was a Jedi once."

Darth Vader stopped before the stairs that led up to the Temple, the clone troopers following on his heels, awaiting his orders.

"...I came back here and freed all the slaves."

His flesh hand went to the lightsaber in his belt, his fingers caressing it lightly. His robe swayed in the Coruscant wind, particularly strong that fateful night.

Vader looked up from beneath his hood at the heavy doors he had first crossed when he was a small boy, a newly freed slave from Tatooine. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was the one to bring him here. He was the man whom Anakin Skywalker owed his freedom.

But Qui-Gon was long dead now. The first of Anakin's painful losses to an enemy he was never taught how to defeat.

"I wasn't strong enough to save you..."

His mother was the second. A helpless Anakin had to watch her die in his arms due to the long time of abuse from the Tusken Raiders that had kidnapped her.

Anakin was late, too late to save her. He failed, failed her.

He made the promise, to his mother's grave, that he wasn't going to fail again.

"I have found a way to save you... I won't lose you, Padmé."

Anakin wasn't going to fail like he failed his mother.

He would do whatever it took to keep his dreams of Padmé dying in giving birth to their child from coming true.

Anakin could no longer rely on the Jedi to guide and help him. He could not trust them about his and Padmé's relationship, or anything at all.

He had a hope to save Padmé's life, and he would cling to it.

"I had a dream I was a Jedi once."

The dream was no more.
