1. I really should have been working on the science project and the thesis defense. The deadlines for those are one after the other. Sadly, can't discuss them here, and really, who wants to hear about scientific processes? I can't even understand half of it yet. But needed to be productive so I read/watched a lot of things.
2. Be Kind Rewind. Saw this on HBO when I was at my mother's house last weekend. I'd like to say that this is one Michel Gondry project that has emotional latitude even with all the machinations going on. (If we're talking writing, this movie is to Gondry what Eternal Sunshine is to Charlie Kaufman. So Eternal Sunshine, which is Gondry + Kaufman, still takes the cake for me.) Let's go, Sweden. Hehehe.
3. Many cooking shows featured Sichuan cuisine. Does this have anything to do with the anniversary of the big quake? Really. I've got sichuan peppercorn coming out of my ears already.
4. Season 2 of The Flight of the Conchords. Gondry makes another appearance: Too many dicks on the dancefloor. I only have until Episode 6. The New Zealand-Australia conflict comes to a head. I need to know what comes after it. So this means I need to beg for the rest of the season from my friendly downloader.
5. Peter Morgan's screenplay of The Queen. The monarchy under siege feels slightly shoehorned, but who's going to argue with a huge stag with at least 14-point antlers. Made me more interested in other Peter Morgan works--The Deal, Frost/Nixon. He's walking the tight line between taking real events--death of Diana, the Nixon interviews--and adds what he says is "informed speculation." Really would have liked to watch the film afterwards, but no one I know has the DVD for this. It would be nice to have a series of screenplay-film combo reviews. But I haven't asked everyone yet.
6. Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds. Graphic novel in 4 chapters from Drawn & Quarterly. Premise is a young cab driver gets approached by a young female soldier who tells him that his father might have died in one of the suicide bombings in Israel. It's a wild goose chase, and we only see the father in a photograph from more than 20 years ago, tapos nakatago pa siya sa likod ng bridal bouquet. Made me think of Istokwa or any of those Mark Anthony Fernandez teen movies from the '90s. Novel is stretching it though. Just thankful that I finally got to read it after many many months of it just lounging around waiting for me to have time to pick it up.
7. Marvel 1602 + New World. This is where my Wednesday went. Because of a Forerunner from the future, the Age of Heroes starts 400 years too early. This has to be solved or the entire Marvel universe will be destroyed. But the thing is, there's a neat explanation that the series can exist right there and it won't affect the present Marvel universe. Stopped reading na after New World. Not really into the Fantastic Four.
8. Went back to Fully Booked hoping to get the first volume of G. Wilson's Air but it has disappeared. Shouldn't have hesistated when I first saw it. Sayang. Saw a few other titles I might be interested in: Local, a girl wanders through 12 states; Kabuki: The Alchemy, because it will allow me to plug into a series and not get lost too much; Cairo, more G. Wilson. Unfortunately, these last few titles are all 1K+ up. Will have to wait then.
9. But while waiting in line, gaze wandered to the pen stands. Now crushing on a series of really brightly colored pens. But somebody bought all the ink for them so will wait until they have new supply of ink.
10. In other worlds, the downside of my stay home had my mother baptizing my belly. It now has its own name. Never watch TV with my mother again. Never watch TV especially when Jessica Soho is on. Now subsisting on salads, fruits, chicken, pasta. Maybe this is why brain doesn't work as well as it should.
