Fuck You! I Got Mine.
Why do we hate the poor? Why do we blame them and get angry at them for everything wrong with our country instead of blaming and getting angry at our greedy politicians and corporations? Why aren't we as angry at corporations for sending jobs overseas? Instead we channel our anger at the poor for buying cellphones, televisions...refrigerators!!! Isn't it humiliating enough to not afford basic living necessities, stand in line asking for public assistance (which is difficult enough to obtain) and then be harassed by your fellow citizens for wanting just a tiny fucking bit of what everyone else has? To, for once, not "look" poor?? I bet that none of those people who harass the poor has ever known what it's like to be poor that you're having to skip meals simply because you cannot afford it. They don't know what it feels like to worry over how utilities, rent, and food will be paid for. Or even how to come up with the cash to send your child off to a school field trip is like. All those folks know how to do is criticize.
I just hate it. I hate how this country criminalizes the impoverished. Like, it's their fault that they cannot make ends meet. Like ending up successful is as easy as breathing. Like all we have to do - as they like to say down here in the south, especially Texas - is "pick yourself up by your bootstraps." Because, y'know, it's that easy. It may be easy if you don't have a mental condition. It may be easy if you have parents who are rich enough to have offshore accounts. It may be easy if you weren't raised in the poorest part of town and weren't always the last school in the district to be portioned funding.
I hate it when people say that you only need to work hard to be successful. Uhm, no sir!! It is luck and opportunity. Because don't those people who are janitors or work in, like, say avocado fields in California work just as hard? The only difference is that they were not given an opportunity. Luck wasn't on their side. And neither is anyone else. Not even the law. The government works so hard to keep the poor poor while the rich just get richer. It is cliche but that is a fact.
So many of us have forgotten how quickly it is to fall to the bottom of the ladder when you're sitting so comfortably at the top. Once we make it, we close the door behind us. We make sure to set up traps for those behind us because, god forbid, they make it too. We don't even care about each other anymore. We really are a very individualistic country.
I really need to write my rant about religion and how it is destroying society and holding it back. But just for the record, I do label myself as an atheist and I am not afraid to admit that. Especially in the bible belt. But another entry for another day.
