Bobby looked out at the crowd. "I didn't think there'd be so many people."
"It's a parade." Trick grinned. "Everybody loves a parade."
Bobby sometimes didn't understand how they could be related. "Not everybody loves the military."
Trick dropped his arms and turned solemn a moment. "They do today."
"I don't want to be here." Bianca had a healthy dislike of the military since they'd hunted her father to his death. It bothered her that her mother still acknowledged her general father. Her grandfather the general. If that's what today celebrated Bianca respectfully declined.
Bobby took her hand and tried to be comforting. "We can go."
She looked away. "No." Her feelings weren't anyone's fault and she kept them well in check always. Of course. Bobby watched her and wished he knew what to do. Trick watched and found the whole thing somewhat comical. Not that he'd ever tell. Overtly.
"Why are we here?"
Ginny turned from the line of soldiers, musicians, and various organizations preparing for their march. "The Avengers need a good rapport with the government."
Trick raised amused eyebrows. "That sounds remarkably self-serving. But why are we here? I feel like the Avengers have soldiers to spare for such things."
Ginny looked away. "They all went to DC this year." Steve Rogers and his family. James Barnes and his family. Carol Danvers and her family. Trick watched it all flicker across her face.
"Ah. Do you wish you went to DC this year?"
Ginny took a breath. "No." She leaned up and kissed him. "My dad always makes a big show at these things anyway."
As she spoke her father landed a few platforms over from their own; before his feet met the stage he was barking orders.
"Are you proud of your father?"
"Of course."
"There's no of course about it." There was something in his voice that made her look at him directly. But he simply smiled. Ginny fell into quiet contemplation.
The parade began. Bobby and Bianca smiled like they meant it; Bobbi and Betty snapped pictures and Jessica tried not to laugh, snark, or otherwise spoil the mood. Tony smiled like he owned it, which he did, and tried not to make everything about him as much as he could knowing everything was about him. Trick played into that attitude with a zeal that alarmed Pepper, entertained Clint, and made Ginny giggle and blush (which was the point). And Ginny stood tall and proud and didn't care what it said about her. And everything said about her started with her smile.
