“Hey, Teddy!” Victoire called from the stairs. “I got Mama’s letter. She said Uncle Harry told her you’re going to spend Christmas with us this year.”

“I know, Vic,” Teddy said, smiling as he saw the delight on her face. “Don’t I always spend Christmas at the Burrow?”

“Well, not always,” she answered, looking thoughtful. “Two years back you went to visit your grandmother.”

Teddy laughed at the memory; she had been so annoyed about it that she didn’t speak to him for weeks. Victoire ran down the stairs and caught up with him on his way to the grounds.

“I’m going outside,” he told her, just in case she didn’t want to go there.

“To the lake?”

“Yes.”

“You go down there often now,” she observed, giving him a teasing glance.

“I just like sitting by the lake,” he said, sounding more defensive than he had hoped. “You’re free to go elsewhere.”

“What do you mean, Teddy Lupin?” she asked, hands on her waist. A frown appeared on her face as they crossed the Entrance Hall and stepped outside.

“Nothing, don’t get upset,” Teddy said softly, hoping she wouldn’t get more agitated.

“Alright, but tell me why you go there so often.”

“I already told you.”

“You mean you go there to lament your love?” she asked, looking rather displeased.

Teddy was shocked to hear her put it that way and the troubled expression on her face befuddled him further. Unable to think of what to say, he looked away. As he sat by the lake, he realized he had indeed been there quite a lot recently. It was December, and no one really wanted to spend their time outside in the cold, especially by the lake, where it was freezing, so Teddy was able to find plenty of solitude and peace whenever he was upset.

“I’m sorry, Teddy,” she muttered, looking at him guiltily. “I just - don’t know.”

“What?” he asked, rather taken aback by the sudden change in her behavior.

“Nothing,” she muttered, not looking at him. And then,
she added, “Tell me - is she really pretty?”

“Who?”

“That girl, I mean.”

She winced Teddy realized she was struggling to speak and to look him in the eye. He was amazed by her question, and he couldn’t believe the thought of that girl would cause her so much annoyance. But she had been asking him a lot of questions about his mystery girl all week and looked rather displeased with his lack of response every time. To him, it seemed like she was jealous. And if she was, it could only indicate one thing. He shook his head, trying not to get his hopes up. But he had to find out the reason Victoire’s behaviour seemed so altered.

“Yes, she’s very pretty,” Teddy said, searching her face for a response.

“Oh,” she mumbled, looking away. She seemed rather uncomfortable, as though there was a lot she wanted to say but there was something holding her back. “Umm - you still haven’t told me who she is.”

“Why do you want to know?”

“Maybe I can help you out,” she suggested, rather unsure of her own reply. “And - and you should tell me everything. You always do.”

“Well, you figure it out half the time,” he said, giving her a slight nudge. “What happened this time?”

“I just told you - I don’t know.”

“Didn’t you try to put it all together? You've had a lot of hints.”

“Screw your hints!”

“I can’t.”

“You’re a git.”

“And you’re insane.”

“Why?”

“Because you haven’t figured it out.”

“How will I know?”

“You should.” He stood up and began to walk away.

“And why is that so?” She got up on her feet and caught up with him.

“Because …” He paused, making sure not to do anything he might have to regret.

“What?” she asked, shaking him with her hands.

“See?” Teddy said, shaking his head in despair. “You are insane, Vic.”

“I blame you for it,” she said, giving him a furious glare.

“I blame you, too,” he replied, unable to keep the smile from his face.

By now, he was almost certain he knew the reason for the change in Victoire’s behaviour. He had been observing her ever since that day he told her he was in love with a girl. It wasn’t that difficult when you’ve known each other all your lives. For some reason, he found it amusing to watch her struggle, because he had always thought it was never possible. He had waited for the right time too long and for some reason, he felt it was the right time to confess.

“For what?”

“For making me lament my love.”

She stared at him with her eyes wide, and the shock was evident on her face as she froze, for a couple of moments. She opened her mouth to speak but no words followed as she continued to stare.

“I - you mean - ” she faltered, looking astounded.

They were a few feet away from the lake and the ground had almost become vacant as twilight fell. A few third years were engaged in snow fights some distance away. Teddy moved nearer and searched her face.

“It was always you,” he whispered in her ears. “How could it be anyone else? I love you, Victoire. You’ve fried my brain ever since I can remember.”

“So you decided to steal my heart for revenge?”

“Yeah, it’s my master plan.” He winked at her.

“It’s too bad I want you to keep it.”

“I never had any intention to return it.”

Teddy smirked and a smile appeared on her face as she kicked his foot. Only she would have the will to kick the boy who had just seconds ago admitted that he loved her. That was Victoire, his Victoire. But things would be different this Christmas, he knew that.

“Teddy, look what Uncle George got me for Christmas!” squeaked a little girl from a corner of the living room.

Lily was always very animated during the holidays, and as he watched her play with one of George’s Ultra Cute Pygmy Puffs, a smile appeared on his face. The Burrow was packed with the entire Weasley family who had been reunited at Christmas. There was great hustle and bustle, with a lot of kids screaming and running about in delight. The chair next to him, which had been vacant all this time, was taken by Harry who appeared from the kitchen, looking rather bored.

“You’re awfully quiet,” Harry observed in a mocking tone. “You could just take a leaf out of James’ book or even Fred’s.”

Both Fred and James appeared to be locked in an intense duel with toy wands. However, the force with which they chanted their spells was enough to turn anyone deaf. Teddy smiled at Harry and was about to say something in response when his eyes fell on Victoire Weasley who was descending down the stairs.

Her flaming red Weasley hair seemed even more gorgeous with the light curls she had got for the occasion. The hair was the only thing she seemed to have received from the Weasleys; in every other way she was different. She had the most expressive blue eyes, a disarming smile, and remarkable grace. He must have been staring at her noticeably because Harry cleared his throat rather loudly after a while.

“Do you have a cold?” asked Teddy, rather flushed.

“No; I was just hoping you would give me as much attention as …” Harry said, giving him a wink.

“Uhhh - I’m always this quiet,” Teddy offered as an explanation. He looked around to see where Victoire was, and he found her chatting away happily with Dominique and Lucy.

“But you’re not always this distracted,” Harry replied, smiling to himself. “Red-headed Weasley girls are indeed very attractive.”

“W-what?”

Harry chuckled slightly and patted him on the shoulder. “Don’t worry, I approve. Oh, and I’m always there if you need some advice.”

With that, he gave Teddy one last smile and walked off towards the kitchen. As he watched Harry walk away, Teddy could feel the warmth in his cheeks; he knew he had gone red with embarrassment. But he knew Harry would keep his secret safe, and if he did need advice he would gladly oblige. Harry almost treated Teddy like a son; he had done so ever since his childhood and the Potters and the Weasleys had always been family to him. While he was lost in thought, Victoire had walked across the room and taken the seat beside him, looking rather exhausted.

“Dominique argues too much!” she complained, frowning.

“You seemed happy when you were talking to her,” Teddy observed, rather amused.

“You were watching?” Victoire asked, going slightly red. “And you know how Dominique is, don’t you? She’s unpredictable.”

“It’s Christmas, Vic,” Teddy said, trying to calm her down. And then, he added more cheerfully, “What have you done to your hair?”

“Don’t you start!” she exclaimed defensively. “I don’t want to argue with you today.”

“All right, sorry,” he said, unable to prevent a smile. “Tell me, did you get my present?”

Teddy had tried really hard to get her a very special present this time. He had collected all the photos they had together ever since they were kids and put them together in an album, which he had decorated himself. The photos told a story - their story. He had given her gifts before but never as a boyfriend and that made it all the more difficult.

“Yes!” she said, brightening up. “It was so sweet, Teddy. I couldn’t stop smiling. Did you compile the album yourself?”

“Yeah, but I had help from a lot of people,” he mumbled, glad that she had liked it so much.

“I like how a different comment appears on top of a photo each time you turn the page it.”

“I had to beg Professor Flitwick to help me with that charm.”

“You’re really sweet, Teddy!” she exclaimed cheerfully, and reached out to give him a hug. She didn’t pull away early and he just put both his arms around her to hold her closer. Holding her was unusually peaceful and he wished he didn’t have to let go.

“You’re cuddlesome.”

“You’re the Teddy bear!”

“Is that what you’re going to call me now?”

“Yes and you can’t complain.”

“You’re forceful.”

“I’m horrible - I didn’t get you a present.”

He stroked her hair gently.

“You already made my Christmas so you don’t need to.”

“No, I do!” she cried adamantly, pulling away.

“Really, you don’t.”

“I want to!” she insisted. “Tell me what you want.”

“Nothing,” he replied, smiling as he caught her looking at him intently.

“Mistletoe!” cried Molly from the other side of the living room. “Look, Teddy and Victoire are under the mistletoe!”

Dominique, Fred, James, Albus, and Rose all turned their heads in their direction. Teddy’s eyes became wide in surprise, and Victoire was looking up to see where the mistletoe was. It wasn’t the first time they had been caught under mistletoe. In previous years, Teddy would just peck Victoire on the cheeks, after much encouragement from the Weasleys and Harry. But it was the first time they were under the mistletoe as a couple.

He looked at Victoire who seemed to have something on her mind. Teddy knew that look - she was up to some mischief.

“Merry Christmas, Teddy bear,” she whispered as she leaned closer.

Before he could say a word, her lips were on his. It was their first kiss and it was a real surprise.
