Teddy Lupin sat by the quiet waters of the lake. It was a breezy December afternoon. There was a calming silence in the air - something which he had been looking for. Restless and deprived of sleep, he had decided to get out of the castle hoping to find solace out in the open. He had been troubled, confused, baffled the past few days - all of it down to Victoire Weasley. Yes, his best friend, who seemed nothing like a friend to him now- she was a lot more. Teddy knew he had fallen for her. He had no idea how it had happened but somehow these feelings had crept into his heart and even though he had tried to deny it for a long time, there was no mistaking that he felt something more for Victoire than he should feel for a friend.

What scared him the most was that his feelings might get in the way of their friendship. Sure, he would like something more but he did not want to lose Victoire as a friend. She meant a lot him - he could never explain how much - and he couldn’t ever afford to lose her.

“Teddy?” a voice called from the right. He turned to find the slender figure of Victoire Weasley smiling feebly at him.

“Hey, Vic! Come, sit beside me,” he said, heaving a sigh.

She always had perfect timing; whenever he was upset, she found him. It was the same as the other day - it was still December, he was still confused about his feelings, he was sitting by the lake and Victoire had found him again.

“I’ve been noticing you and you seem troubled these days” she asked reluctantly, looking at his face.

“Yes, kind of, I guess,” Teddy replied, with a wry smile. He saw a concerned expression spread across her face.

“You’ve fallen for someone,” she said in a gentle tone. “Its so obvious when I look at the way you’ve been behaving. What’s the problem? Is she taken already?”

She fell silent rather abruptly as though she wasn’t entirely sure of what she said. She looked away from Teddy and turned towards the lake, staring blankly at the water. Teddy thought he saw distress in her eyes for a while before she had turned away but he quickly ignored it considering it to be his misconception. He was surprised that she knew what was bothering him.

“You read me well, Vic, but not too well,” Teddy replied after a moment of silence, shaking his head. “Yeah, I’ve fallen for a girl but there’s no way I’m ever going to tell her about it. If I do, she’ll ask me to get out of her life right that minute and I can’t lose her, so I’m staying quiet.”

Victoire looked slightly taken aback by his response, but she quickly hid any hint of surprise on her face. She had probably expected him to react otherwise.

“You won’t tell her?” she asked in a heavy tone. “I know you have a very low self esteem but this is the limit! Maman says you should always express your feelings to the person you like.”

“I know she doesn’t like me -”

“You’re just assuming that,” Victoire said dismissively. “Give yourself a chance at least; give her a chance. She might like you too. Since when do you like her?”

“Actually, I have no idea,” Teddy said, slightly bemused by the question.

“How long have you known her?’ Victoire pressed.

“Ever since we were kids,” Teddy answered reluctantly. “Forget about it, Victoire. I think she likes someone else. She’s my friend and it’s better if we stay that way. I don’t want to ruin things.”

Teddy didn’t know if talking to Victoire about this was a good idea but he really needed to get it out of his head and he couldn’t think of anyone who would understand but Victoire. If only she knew who the girl in question was - yet Teddy knew he could tell her everything but that. He was hoping Victoire would figure it out; he had dropped quite a big hint but he also knew he was being rather too hopeful.

“Teddy, you don’t mean that,” Victoire said, looking at him intently. “I know you really want to be with her. Why are you so afraid to tell her? Someone else will if you don’t. Will you be okay if you see her with someone else?”

“No, but …” his voice trailed off as he sighed. “Look, I’ll just wait for her to say it to me first.”

“Is this a game to you? I’m going to make you say it first …” Victoire exclaimed in disgust. “Do you like her or not?”

“I do like her,” Teddy began in a defeated tone. “You have no idea what she means to me. I want her to be mine and I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. I just really … I think I love her.”

Victoire looked slightly flushed but she recovered in time. “Tell her so,” she whispered, seeming slightly unsure of what she was saying. “I’m sure she feels the same way about you.”

“No!” Teddy exclaimed getting up suddenly. “If I tell her I love her, she’s going to hate me. She might even ask me to get out of her life, Victoire. I can’t lose her - I really can’t.

“Teddy ---”

“I don’t want to talk about this,” Teddy said, in a final tone. “Talking about it is really hard for me. Let’s go inside now, please.”

Victoire opened her mouth in protest but gave in after seeing the pleading look on his face. And then, they went inside the castle without a word on the subject.
