It's Leo DiCaprio week on Film4 this week, so I've been watching alot of his films lately. He's always been my favourite actor, but watching his films seriously just made me fall in love all over again.
Yesterday I watched "Titanic" and "This Boy's Life" on T.V, and he blew me away. From such a young age he showed such passion and dedication - he chose brilliant roles, and completely immersed himself in the most admirable way. I really look up to Leo, because you can tell he absoloutly loves his job and puts in 100% effort; I think it's ridiculous he hasn't won an Oscar yet, because if anyone deserves one, it's him. I watched an interview with him recently, and he said he doesn't mind the paparazzi because he loves his career so much. TAKE NOTE, KSTEW. That's true passion there, and I really admire it.
Now I'm gonna start by saying that I actually do not like Titanic. The script, pacing, cinematography and characterisation on the whole is pretty weak and the dialogue is packed with cliches. I think Kate Winslet is great, but I didn't think she was that good in Titanic and I can really imagine another actress working better as Rose. But Leo takes the most one-dimensional character in the world and brings him to life - on paper, Jack's you're typical American hero who lacks any kind of prominant flaws. A Gary-Stu. Leo makes him into a teenager who's just falling in love, and he's just as nervous, scared and reckless as any other boy would be. It's his dazed smiles, fearful glances and nervous twitching that make the character rather Cameron's writing. I guess I can't fault the film for it's depiction of the ship sinking - it's heartbreaking and epic all at the same time, and I love the last half hour or so of the film.
Also, Avatar's main tagline "I see you" was in Titanic first. I don't understand why this man's cliched, overrated films make so much money.
"This Boy's Life" on the other hand, was absoloutly sensational. if you haven't seen it, please watch it on youtube or something because it's amazing. It's about a young tear-away Tobey who is constantly the target of his abusive, violent stepfather. It's not some lifetime movie - it's subtle and heartbreaking and it honestly has been in my mind all day. I love it because it's not some issues movie. Dwight's abuse of Tobey is just part of the story - the real story is Tobey's growth from a child to a teenager verging on manhood. I am not easily moved by movies, but I was crying bucketloads when Tobey breaks down in tears while drunk with his friends. After the movie, it just hit me how many kids are abused at home and how terrible it really is. If I didn't convince you to watch it, then i'll leave you with this: Robert DiNero plays the step-father, Dwight. Now you'll want to watch it :D
Anyway, I just wanted to write down what I've been thinking all day, really. My favourite film ever is probably Romeo + Juliet with Leo, but I'll save my raving for another post :) But please, please if you haven't seen it go watch "This Boy's Life". It really moved me, way more than Titanic ever has.
