Jenny, Pethero and I won the diary writing competition for the High School. So I nabbed a set of playing cards. That'll do nicely for D of E since my last set disintegrated in the rain on the last D of E expedition. Thank you. You have no idea how boring D of E can be when it's cold and you don't want to leave the tent for fear of sitting in sheep poo.

D of E stands for Duke of Edinburgh and it's an award scheme thingy set up by the duke himself. The award consists of a service section, sport section, skill section and expedition. Service is basically any voluntary work, e.g. working in a charity shop. Sport is pretty self-explanatory. Skill is something like playing an instrument or learning a language (other than languages in school). You need to do each for a certain amount of time and you get a record book where you write about each section with your own comments and then get each section signed, e.g. by your music teacher if your skill is playing an instrument, and they will comment on how you've been doing. There are three levels of the award: Bronze, silver and gold. for bronze you need to do something like 3 months of two of sports service or skill and 6 months of the other, for silver it's something like two for 6 months and the other for 3 and I don't know about gold ( ... )

Sorry, I phrased that very badly. What I meant was that I looked like that in the photos and I mean that I usually look like that in photos (but obviously not in real life according to your comment) regardless of how fat/thin I am at the time.
