Having Maxine around helps, but only so long as she isn't throwing herself into danger or being reckless. And frankly, despite the bleakness and constant criminal activity and violence, Gotham seems a lot more attractive while

[Not very far from Terry, Loe is skirting against the edges of the fog. His dogs are darting in and out of the edges, never going far enough in to disappear. He glances up as he passes beneath Terry's tree, and smirks.]

[Terry's watching. At first his jaw hung open, but the second Loe looked at him, he snapped it shut.

After a moment, he nods his head.]

Nice dogs.

[They remind him of Ace. Except twice the size and with twice the attitude.]

[Loe smiles a little--he does like when people compliment his dogs, he's very fond of them--and returns the nod.]

[Oh. OH.

Terry knows who you are. Any hint of a smile fades, but he keeps his tone neutral for now.]

You sure they should be getting so close to that fog?

[That's right, Terry. Make the connection. You can do it, you smart boy.]

Stories? Should listen to them. The locals here know what they're talking about.

[He turns away from Terry briefly and whistles. One of the dogs reappears from the fog, growling faintly. Must have gone in a little too far.]

The things in there. They've never come out. It's safe enough as long as you don't go in.

[Terry shifts on the branch to face Loe, leaning his forearms on his knees. He watches the dog with interest, obviously cataloging it as a potential clue for later.]

What are they?

[stormcleaver]

[The dog flops on its side, yawning widely. Clearly, it's very interesting. The other two sniff at it briefly before returning to their own idle investigations of the area. Wow, this tree smells incredibly...tree-like!]

Sorry, never seen one up close.

[He's not buying that answer.]

Don't have to see one to know what it is.

[Not even for ten whole dollars, Terry?]

Fair enough. But I don't pay much attention to things I know I don't stand a chance against. They stay in there, I stay out here--and pray we don't get any foggy nights.

[But that last part catches his attention, and Terry looks somewhat surprised.]

You mean they can come as far as the temple?

[Okay now that is worrying.]

[Loe shakes his head.]

No. The temple is protected. They can't get in here, at least. This place is always safe.

I guess that's something.

[He's still pretty sure Loe knows more than he's letting on, but at least Terry got some answers.]

We're not the first people you brought here, are we? What happened to the others?

[stormcleaver]

[Oh, Terry. Old Bruce would be proud of you, thinking the worst of everyone.]

Went home a long time ago. We only Call outsiders when we need help and send them home after.

[A pause.]

You're not stuck here forever, if that's what you're worried about.

[Terry's learning to be an old cynic too.]
