Misha Defonseca - Memoire of the holocaust years

Apparently the author of this book has admitted that his book is a fake.  I don't quite remember if aside from James Freyre, and now this author, someone else has done this.  However, it still surprises me of why they would do something like this.  The difference between fiction and non-fiction is not really something that would require a scientist to figure it out, so why the deliberate intention of lying?  Do they think it won't make the best seller list?

The fact that this author lied doesn't bother me as much as the reviews for the book.  Many people in Amazon for example put glowing reviews in how this book was inspiring and so forth.  But until yesterday there was only two or three questioning the real validity of the story.  Now that the author has admitted to the book not being true, now it has a lot of people banging on that fact and giving negative reviews.  But that's not my issue, my problem is how do people really read.  Does analyzing has gone dead?  How can anyone miss the fantastic tale of being raised by wolves?  Or the fact that she travel from country to country with nobody finding her, not to mention the distance she walked.  There is so much of the story that I can't see being real that it honestly makes me question if there is any analysis when people read.

I never got the chance of reading the James Freyre supposed Memoire.  How ever I did see parts of the show of Oprah that he came out.  I kept on frowning questioning some stuff, but hey if it was on Oprah I figure that it had to be well researched.  Guess they really don't do a good research to this stuff well before they put it on the TV.

Now it has happen again and I find myself questioning how do people actually read.  Doesn't anybody question this stuff when they read?  Do people all jump in a bandwagon and forget to really think for themselves?  Perhaps I'm over-reacting but there is seems to be a frenzy for the how many pages or books you read, rather than a frenzy for real book analysis.  Why does this type of stuff keeps on happening right in front of the faces of Editors and Publishers?

authors, books
