Those of you who've been in fandom for a long time have probably read these two already, but they're good enough that I think they're worth a re-read. And I'm betting that there are some who read this LJ who, like me, are relatively new to fandom.
The first story is
Umad Learns Sumerian, by
annakovsky. It takes place the summer between Season 6 and Season 7 and describes how Dawn, with Giles' help, begins to study Sumerian. I love it because it has such graceful characterizations of both Dawn and Giles, two characters who we don't always get to see interact much in fic (or, for that matter, in canon).
The second is
Essential Fragility by K. V. Wylie. The story goes AU at "Graduation Day" and assumes that just Willow, Buffy and Giles have survived the Mayor's Ascension. The story takes the form of alternating diary entries by the three of them. It's incredibly bleak but beautifully written. This story was one of the ones that made me fall in love with fanfic in the first place.
(Sorry again about the absence last time -- the whole moving-across-the-country project was even more chaotic than I imagined! Back now with reliable Internet access...)
