So, I decided it was finally time to grow up and move out of my parent's house. Well, at least the moving out part, we'll see how the growing up thing goes. On Sunday I began the moving process into my very own apartment!
I've lived away from home before, 2 years in a dorm and 2 years in a house with room mates while at college. The thing though is that in none of that time did I live alone. In the dorms, the largest piece of furniture that I brought was an additional desk for one of the rooms, other than that I mostly just brought computer and clothing. The house was a bit different, but I didn't handle any of the furnishings for the main communal areas. I did have my own furnished living room type setup, but that was a futon, 2 chairs, and an ottoman. During my time there I either slept on that futon in my living room area, or eventually in a bed that I'd brought with me.
This new apartment, I get to provide everything... and it's a rather large apartment. It's has 2 bedrooms, and 1160 square feet of space. Some of the apartments that I saw were only around 650 square feet. Due to this massive need for things, I've spent most of today out shopping. You don't really realize how many little things you use until you actually have to go out and take care of them on your own. So today I bought most everything that I'll need for my kitchen and bathroom. My living room currently has my futon, which I still need to setup. My bedroom has my dresser, and the other room has my computer desk. The desk and the dresser, much like the futon, are in a state of partial disassemble.
On Wednesday, I plan to add a love sac to my living room setup. At some point, I need to decide on a bed. I spent a good chunk of today mattress shopping, all I have to say is damn them. The mattress stores advertise good deal on mattresses, but when you try out the mattresses they're advertising, they suck. The nice mattresses are much most expensive than I had expected. Oh well, there goes another $1000.
I guess I should also get a dining room set of some sort. My dining room area is larger than I'd realized, I'm going to need to get some sort of largish table for it. For my living room area, I have to decide what I want to do with it. I kind of want to get a large, sectional couch for the room, and have that in addition to my love sac, and then move my futon into my second bedroom, which is going to function as my computer room. Couches though, are also expensive.
I have a very strong desire to not have a television in my apartment. I have mixed feelings about TV, but in the end I believe I have an addiction to them and feel that they encourage apathy, laziness, and generally diminish a person's true potential to accomplish real and meaningful things with their life.
Until I get around to figuring out what type of legitimate internet connection I'd like at home, I'm stealing from my neighbors, I have 4 unsecured wireless networks that I can access from my apartment.
Ok, I'm getting hungry, and I've yet to actually purchase any food for my new apartment, so I think it's time to head over to harris teeter.
Expect more of these rambly run-on updates from me. If I manage to stick to my desire to not give in to television, I could see these becoming a regular thing.
