Lullaby

It was an odd addition to the “mullet rock” that comprised the rest of his brother’s collection. A cassette simply marked “Dean” in his father's handwriting. Curious, Sam stuck the tape in. There was an old rattling quality to the sound as if it had been copied over and over.

Stars shining bright above you;
Night breezes seem to whisper I love you
Birds singing in the sycamore tree.
Dream a little dream of me.

He recognized the Mama Cass arrangement but the voice was different. Sam suddenly had an emotional memory. He suddenly felt... loved.

Say nighty-night and kiss me;
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me.
While I'm alone, blue as can be,
Dream a little dream of me.

Dean came back to the car. His composure shattered as the song continued. He sat down hard into the driver’s side. Sam felt his throat tightening but he still couldn’t place the feeling.

“Dean?”

Stars fading but I linger on, dear---
Still craving your kiss.
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear,
Just saying this...

Dean swallowed.  His voice was shaky. “Yeah?”

Sam’s own voice wasn’t much steadier. “Who’s singing this?”

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you---
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you.
But in your dreams, whatever they be,
Dream a little dream of me.

Dean met Sam’s eyes. “It’s Mom. She used to sing this to us as a lullaby.”

He drew in a ragged breath.  “Thought I’d lost this tape a while ago.”

Stars fading but I linger on, dear---
Still craving your kiss.
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear,
Just saying this...

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you---
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you.
But in your dreams, whatever they be,
Dream a little dream of me.
