It wasn't as if Dean set out to watch Oprah. There was just some sort of weird cosmic connection to it.
No matter what state he was in, no matter what hotel. No matter if the television got 500 channels or 5, no matter what time of day he tried to find something to watch.
Oprah was always there.
And he wouldn't have gotten hooked if she hadn't started helping people. Then she felt like a kindred spirit. A soulmate. Dean found himself fantasizing that she would buy him weaponry and trick out the Impala.
And he would die before he admitted any of it.
