We Now Return You To Your Regularly Scheduled Social Stupidity

When I'm not embarassing myself by saying stupid things on people's livejournals, I like to say inadvertently offensive things to touring musicans.

I went to Sodastream on saturday night with Laurence and Gemma. Laurence and I enjoyed support act Oliver Mann so much that we went halves in his cd. We were delighted when Oliver came and sat with us at our table and regaled us with tales from the high life of being a dishwashing rock star. The conversation turned to how he and his girlfriend had to buy an alarm because they had to be up early the next morning for their flight home. I suggested, somewhat prudently, that they make sure they arrived early because the "early flights are the cheap ones, so they're always booked out with stingy people." Oliver incredulously enquired whether I was perhaps suggesting that he was one of the aforementioned stingy people, whereupon I rejoined with "well you've only sold one cd tonight, so join the dots!"

Now my implication here, in the context of the conversation, was that it is insanely difficult for even gifted musicians to make a living at it and what a travesty that is. Unfortunately, it came across slightly the wrong way and I spent the rest of the night hating myself until Oliver said he forgave me, and went so far as to give me another copy of his cd to show there was no ill-feeling!

Of course, I couldn't dare profit from my social stupidity because that would only encourage me, so I paid out Laurence's share of the cd we bought together and let him have the free one.
