My life is truly unfabulous these days.

Still sort of hiding from internet interaction. It’s like after I’ve stayed away for a while, it gets easier to stay away. I don’t know. I miss you guys, though. RL has been fairly fraught for the last few days, although things seem to be getting back on track now. Instead of pointless rambling about that, let’s have 1775 words of pointless ( Read more... )

But Gerard totally gives Frankie a job! He's the boss and he can do that! I mean, it's just a job as Gerard's assistant basically, but Frankie ends up doing a lot more than that--like telling Gerard what comics are awesome and talking him into publishing them, which she is frighteningly good (and accurate) at doing. She's also really great at dealing with the artists and writers when they come into the office, and everyone pretty much loves her. It gets to the point where Gerard just shows up at work and listens to what Frankie tells him because she is so awesome at her job. Gerard just makes Starbucks runs, which was supposed to be part of Frankie's job, but she is much better at calming down their artists when they're freaking out about deadlines and such, so the least Gerard can do is go out and get the coffee, right?

He figures, it's the least he can do when she's so helpful... and kind of better at his job than he is. He has no idea what he'd do without her.

And then he starts wondering how the hell he made it through the last couple of years without her. Because Gerard has really missed Frankie a lot, even though Mikey sort of kept him up to date about what she'd been up to. Still, he missed her a lot, and now that he sees her five days a week at work (and sometimes more often when they're really busy) he really wishes that he'd kept in touch with her. But they're getting to know each other again! And Frankie is still as awesome as she was in high school, only maybe more so now, and Gerard just really thinks Frankie is amazing and so great to have around the office. Also, he really likes it when she wears those cute little cardigans (completely unironically) to work, and shit, he is so, SO FUCKED because Frankie is his employee and his friend and he is having naked thoughts about her again like he did back when they were dating.

And it would be really awkward to be all "so, um, do you still like me, check y/n" because it could screw up his friendship with her andhe'd lose his best employee in the process--that, or it would just become unbearably awkward at work. He likes his job, and he doesn't want that at all.

So he's maybe pining a little, because once he realizes that oh, shit, he still likes her like he did back in the day, he can't stop thinking about it. He just hopes Frankie doesn't notice he's being weird around her all of a sudden.

Gerard doesn't think Frankie notices because he has become really, really excellent at compartmentalizing. He can be the boss at the office and a friend when they go out for coffee or to see a movie or to get lunch together, and none of those things has any bearing whatsoever on the fact that Gerard jerks off thinking about Frankie before going to sleep six nights out of seven.

Gerard never asks Frankie what happened to Bob and Jamia, but after he tells her that he and Lindsey broke off the engagement because Lindsey met a drummer named Kitty, Frankie tells him that Bob and Jamia are still together, living in Chicago where they own a club. Bob does sound and Jamia does the rest, and they send Frankie birthday and Christmas cards and emails and they still call her once in a while, too. When Gerard asks Frankie if she misses them, she smiles and tells him that they weren't what she wanted. Gerard worries that Frankie would quit her job if she knew how much he wants her, how much he wishes they hadn't broken up.

He feels like a giant creep about it, of course. How could he not? She doesn't have any idea as to what he thinks about once he goes home and gets away from her for a while. As far as he knows, at least.

He wonders what happened with her and Bob and Jamia sometimes, but even as a friend it doesn't feel like it's his place to ask since she did tell him a little, and she doesn't ask him more about Lindsey either, so he figures they're even.

Even and very, very single. He hasn't started looking around because all he can think about is Frankie, but she's not with anybody either. He's trying not to get his hopes up about that.

Gerard tries not to get his hopes up, even when Frankie sometimes stays the night at his place when they're under a deadline and working super late. It's just that Frankie is still living at her mom's in Jersey, and even though Gerard's tiny little apartment is in Brooklyn, it's a lot closer than Belleville when they're in the office past midnight. Gerard always puts clean sheets on his bed for Frankie and takes the couch for himself, and he lets her have the first shower in the morning before they drag themselves back to work. (Gerard's hygiene has improved a lot since college, okay? He showers every single day when he has to go into the office!) He lies on his lumpy sofa and tries not to listen for Frankie breathing down the hall. He definitely never goes and sits outside the bedroom door at four in the morning while she's sleeping either ( ... )

He's her boss, they've been broken up for years, it would be weird. Plus, then she probably would stop staying over at his house when they work late, and he would miss that. So he is doing SO MUCH PINING. He's convinced it doesn't show at all, but he also has a tendency to stare at Frankie when he thinks she isn't looking. If she doesn't notice (and she might not, she's kind of oblivious at times) someone else definitely has by now.

Unfortunately, the person who notices is, of course, Mikey. He stops by the office (without Alicia for once) to take Gerard to lunch, and he finds Gerard and Frankie at opposite ends of the couch in Gerard's office, reading the very first issue of the very first comic Frankie told Gerard he should publish. Frankie's actually reading, but Gerard is just kind of staring at her from behind his comic book, and Mikey catches him at it and just stands in the doorway to Gerard's office shaking his head at his older brother. Gerard's face is on fire when he realizes Mikey's made him, but thankfully Frankie doesn't notice because she jumps up from the sofa and flings herself at Mikey for a hug and Gerard IS NOT staring at her ass in those jeans, okay ( ... )
