Jayme took the injured cat to the veterinarian today. The verdict is: her pelvis is broken at the left hip. The facilities to treat such an injury do not exist here. We will make her comfortable and give her a warm place to sleep, food, and water. If she's lucky, the bone will knit in a way that leaves her a good range of motion. She hasn't ( Read more... ) -

Thanksgiving and the Zoo, Iraqi Style
Today slownewsday and I celebrated our second Thanksgiving in Iraq. I took the morning off and did my husbandly turkey-cooking duties while Jayme did the not-insignificant task of preparing everything else. We fed 15 people on a 5-kilogram bird, a huge pile of mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn & green beans, giblet gravy and toasted samoon (Iraqi bread). ( Read more... ) -

Today marks one year since Jayme and I have been in Iraq. We left the US on 31 July 2004, and after a few delightful days in Greece, arrived in Baghdad on 5 August 2004. And so, it's time to look back on what I have done.

Odds and Ends
slownewsday and I have moved into our new home, a "one story" bungalow in the back yard of my company's office. The ground floor is our private home, shared between Jayme and myself, TheBoss, and with two guest rooms. On the roof is a small apartment with bathroom and guard shack, where the guards live. Pink Eye died this morning. She came to us a kitten 13 days ago. Since that time, we've fed and cleaned and cared for her like parents over our own child. And we fought, and she fought, but she was very sick and we could do no more ( Read more... ) -
Words from the CaSH
I spent the afternoon on the roof of the 31st Combat Support Hospital (CaSH), debugging a reticent satellite system. Some days these satellites make me wish for a good drive bar *.
* Surviving coworkers of breakpoint may recall this "tool" he carried. A 30 cm long steel pipe, the drive bar was used to motivate hard drives with stuck heads. Kind of like ( Read more... ) -
Movin' on up!
Momma cat has moved her brood to new living quarters. Last evening she carried them into the staff entry room, which is just off the kitchen and is where many of the staff sit all day. Bezuna!
A scrawny calico cat has been hanging around the office lately. She's ragged-looking, often dirty, and pregnant. I found the staff chasing her with a broom two days ago, which I put an immediate stop to. They never understand why the boss extends his protection to creatures they consider rodents, but they obey with a kind of wry amusement ( Read more... )
