Having a balance arm provides a weight compensation for whatever movements your wand arm is to make.
So to say you were using the Cobra stance and you cast a spell. Your arm will end in front of you instead of behind you, and your balance arm ends behind you instead of in front of you.
Mm. Though they do seem awkward and a little bit unbalanced due to the pictures.
With your feet spread and one leg bent your core is in balance.
Though these two stances put you in a difficult position, because it gives your opponent more of a chance to strike a part of your body. Especially when you're in a field with different opponents.

It's been a while since I last taught those two stances. I favored the Tao stance, even though it is now noted difficult and old.
