So, I finally saw Watchmen last night. There were a few things I didn't care for, but overall, I liked it a lot. It followed the comic pretty damned close.
I was a little wary at first in seeing it because I'm honestly not a big fan of director Zack Snyder. Sin City I thought was decent, nothing special. I absolutely despised 300...one because it was just a special effects fest(I mean, do you really need to make blood splatter cgi now?) and two, to see how many fight scenes we can fit into one movie. No offense, but I'm not really one to just swallow whatever hollywood says is cool. The story of 300 was pretty much shite.
Well, I thought that Watchmen pretty much captured the feel of the comic. The beginning credits is probably one of my favorite parts of the whole film(kudos for using Dillain, perfect for the period.)...it was a work of art. Almost every character was spot on, props for not having to use Hollywood big names. I was very into it, getting lost in most of the movie. The fight scenes were awesome, though, corny as all hell...but forgiven being that this was a COMIC BOOK movie and that's just supposed to be how it is.
There were a few things I wasn't happy with. Some of the scenes were drawn out that didn't need to be. Like the beginning fight scene...we get it, he's getting beat up. Plus the sex scene that lasts like 5 minutes(funny, I remember one of those in 300).
The actor who plays Ozymandias was WAY too thin and much too young looking for the character. Nixon's makeup was so horrible and distracting I kept giggling every time he came onscreen. And Moloch just looked like a guy with little bunny-ears(Granted, I love Matt Frewer), but Moloch is supposed to look half-dead.
But the part that bothered me the most was the ending. The ending of the Watchmen comic is probably one of my all-time endings in a comic ever. The change didn't take too much away from the film and I honestly understand why he did it that way...But...
It never needed to be changed. The only reason it was different was to appeal to the big hollywood types who thought mainstream America wouldn't like it and it would decrease sales.
TOO BAD, it's not FOR them...it's for the fans. If the rest of America happen to like it...icing on the cake. If there is one thing I've learned, it's YOU DO NOT SACRIFICE YOUR VISION. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOR THE FANS. Shame on you Snyder for bowing to the man.
Changing the ending was a Cop-out. Lame, but that's what hollywood is anymore.
Regardless, I can't help but say how good of a movie it was...cop-out ending or not. I highly recommend it. Will probably be picking it up on dvd when it comes out.
