Decorating trends = WHUT?

Sorry, but since when do skirted dining chairs, fabric window cornices, and slipcovers on EVERYTHING say "youthful and current"? Froufy skirts on furniture are the epitome of old lady decorating, with a side of 1990s "shabby chic." And one slipcovered piece might be okay, but everything?? To me that says either "My furniture is too ugly be seen but I can't afford to replace it" or "My furniture is far too nice for plebeians like you to sit on," neither of which is an impression I particularly want to give. And too many white linen slips in one place just look like dust covers.

Also, I'm pretty sure anyone who slaps gray paint on Grandma's mahogany dining set is going to regret it inside five years. Paint is for oogy scratched-up flea market finds, not classic antiques or family heirlooms. Or pristine hardwood floors. :P

Speaking of gray paint, what's with all this white/gray/grey/greige lately? To be sure it's a nice change from ubiquitous beige, but it'll date just as quickly and be even harder to live with. White-on-white rooms can be soothing in a beach house sort of way, and silvery gray can be serene and elegant, but they're both suited for very particular settings, not a "must-have" trend. And I'd probably kill myself the first time I tried to spend winter with a greige living room... really, like it's not gray and boring enough outside?

Also, can we just call seagrass rugs a cliche already? I liked seagrass when it was a creative accent wall treatment that popped up once in a while in Asian/tropical rooms, but it just does not go with every house or every style, and people need to stop slapping it down regardless of whether it actually makes any sense in context.

And this really has nothing to do with trends, since toile has been hovering on the fringes of "in" for a good decade... but I HATE it. Well, I guess it's not inherently awful - there are some cute little ironic "updated" toiles that make me chuckle - but have yet to see it used in home decorating in a way that I thought worked. Worst ever: Huge antique farmhouse sink installed in a sleek contemporary bathroom and surrounded by this enormous flouncy gathered toile skirt. I mean, WHY?
