we did it. the fam watched the entire set of extended editions in "one sitting." we took breaks, sure, and it lasted (extended?) into today, but it's pretty much all that happened sunday. started "the fellowship of the ring" at 11:24 am, finished it at 3:04 pm. "the two towers" went from 3:16 to 7:15, and "the return of the king" lasted from 8:03 to 12:07/18 (end of story/where i stopped the long-ass credits). this was the first time i can recall noticing boromir does not receive a gift from galadriel. didn't read the books, so it might be in there. don't tell me to read them, i already have too much on my plate! and they keep getting bumped further down, as i'm happy with things as they are. i also noticed one instance apiece in tfotr and ttt of precursors to the "into the west," sung by annie lennox at the end of trotk. these little embryonic melodies show just what a genius is howard shore.
oh, that reminds me. i remember thinking thomas newman's score for "snicket" sounded an awful lot like some of the more moody, atmospheric work danny elfman did for either "good will hunting," "family man," or both. pretty sure it was just gwh though, during the credits.
