I agree with you, it gets really confusing. Things did change and do change with patches so it's possible that what she said was once true.
I went searching last night to try and get a definitive answer on the differences between a .sim and a sim in Sims3Pack but didn't get too far - hence my today experiment. I also downloaded a couple of things to look at the Sims3Pack but didn't really understand the results.
For example, Susie-Q's Sims3Pack seemed to contain a package file and several jpgs. So I gave up on that.
What I now think is that .sim files contain directions to content (like skintones and elf ears) but not the actual content. I believe that if you don't have the content then it defaults to what you do have. It's possible that people don't necessarily realise that because they may have different defaults or don't remember or examine the picture of the original sim (the one they downloaded) too closely and compare it to what they do have.
I'm totally confused over the Sims3Packs though. It was so odd about Lindy's chin and Oz's chin. I don't understand how it seemed to include a slider for the width, a slider that was invisible in CAS... and, if it could do that for chin width, why couldn't it do it for ears? (I'm presuming that Susie's skin tone problem was related to your duplicate slider thingy and thus was a one off.)
However, the ear slider we both have was extracted from an EA slider and that EA slider will, I think, be available as a patch in September when Supernatural comes out, so maybe, in the end, it won't be an issue. ?? (I'm sitting here shaking my head in confusion, lol)
Being a bit scatterbrained this evening, I'm just thinking back to a possible change in one of the patches. There was trouble with bad custom content attaching itself to Sims3Packs a while back - the Exchange was full of dolls and nakedness and half horse things - so maybe EA changed how it all worked because of that?
And I agree about her sims, liking that little dark haired red one, he's like some kind of evil imp, lol, all the offspring are great, loving the fey look.
Anyway, I'm hoping that you have the same ear sliders as she does (I haven't checked her link) and that nothing changes on the sims when you introduce them into your game. Have fun! I'll look out for any 'interesting' results you may get.
As I got sidetracked by a phone call and then the tv. I'm only just about to sort out the skintones on my binned sims, extract a few and then 'Play with Genetics'... hope you have a good evening.
Well, it gets weirder... I downloaded three of her sims (they're all .sim) and one of them was broken in such a way that, when she was in my Saved Sims folder, NONE of my saved sims showed up in CAS. Not even the ones I made. I tested it by taking the new sims out one by one, and narrowed it down to the specific one. In the folder - no saved sims. Out of the folder - back to normal. I have NO idea what could cause that.
Another of her sims is fine, though she looks kind of different in the face, but I'm thinking it might just be a CC thing. I didn't explore it too closely.
And the third came out charcoal crispy. He was a .sim file. So where you said, "What I now think is that .sim files contain directions to content (like skintones and elf ears)" - I think that's right. But the game doesn't necessarily default to what you have. According to negomimogen, they should have had an ephemera or some kind of freckles skin and I don't have either one (I have different freckles). So why was the guy charcoal and the chick wasn't? IDK.

I did that too. Good thing we have furryjackal to explain things to us. Though I still have questions! :P

Jpgs O_o Oh lordy. Never mind... I don't need to know everything xD

LOL! I wish I'd seen that! Half horse things! :D

I bred one this evening, two of his kids are frogs because, well, their mom *grin* but one daughter is super super cute! And I forgot to save her to the bin before I put the family in the game >:C
That's so weird, I don't really understand why the files behaved differently... and they're all newly created because that was a new post. Makes no sense. Neither the .sim that 'broke' your Sim Bin or the one who came out charcoal where another similar one didin't. I don't understand *wail... lol*.
The super cute daughter can be saved to your Sim Bin from within the game. If you use the mirror to 'change appearance' (I think that's what the interaction is called. It allows you to change hair and makeup, not facial structure.) then there will be an option to save to the Sim bin.
If it's not on the mirror screen then it may be on the 'change outfit' screen that you get to by using the dresser.
Sorry, I can't quite remember for certain.
I've finally changed all your old skins to your new ones (except for one, I'm dithering over that as she looks good in the charcoal) and Played with Genetics. I've one that I think is super cute too, from your Lindy and another quirky one that I really like. Odd thing is that I decided I detested the father, lol.
I'm going to have to share them later. Probably tomorrow now.
Hope I get a chance to see more from your game. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
The one that "broke" the Sim Bin wasn't one of her newly created ones... it was from her Pollination Exploration sims here. Maybe... it has something to do with EPs or patches or something, since that's an older one? I didn't think of that till now.

Oh! Thank you! I will do that, then. I knew there had to be some way, but I was assuming it would be more difficult. :)
I'm looking forward to seeing your new kidlets! :D
I paired your Rue with furryjackal's Prot and set them free in Lunar Lakes... They are a totally adorable couple! I'm hoping when I check on them again they'll have cute babies. :D
