Family Time

Teresa and I took Nana out to La Fuente for lunch today. They have a Sunday Brunch and Mariachis Thursday - Sunday, so Nana spent a lot of time talking to the mariachis about the songs that they knew and how she learned them all from her papa when they lived on the ranch. I guess he played the guitar for his (many) children, and taught them to sing the songs. She was especially excited about Volver, Cielito Lindo, and Alla en el Rancho Grande. The mariachis did really well with her (as Nana can be a pest) and played everything she asked for plus some additional songs that they liked. In all, it was a really nice experience.
During one of the songs, Teresa turned to me and said "At Nana's funeral we should get mariachis, call mom and tell her that." Which is both sweet and terrible. I love Nana, and I've spent more time with her this year than I probably have in my entire life before this, but it's all been pretty good. She's got an honesty that I can respect, and she's old enough that her lack of tact rarely gets her in trouble. She's still fairly strong too, and by that I mean strong-willed. She does what she wants to, and even though she doesn't drive herself anymore, she still finds a way to be in control of her life. I respect that about her. A lot. I just haven't gotten used to the idea that being as old as she is means she's got to die sometime, and probably sometime in the next decade. I know Mercy is something like 94 now, and Nana could certainly reach 100 even, there's just no way to be sure.

On a lighter note, I have Rancho Grande stuck in my head, but I don't know many of the words, so I'm stuck sort of humming the tune and shouting out "Rancho Grande" every now and again.
